Hello all, My name is Terrence and I need a little advice to help me lose weight. (Sorry if this is rather lengthy, but it's my whole story)
I've been overweight/obese most of my life (teens through 20's) I'm 6'5 tall and my highest weight was 380lbs. When I turned 25, I decided to do something about my weight. I started eating better and cut soda, but never really exercised. In about 6 months, I got down to 345lbs through diet alone and kind of plateaued there. Several months later when I turned 26, I decided to take up exercising but didn't have the money for a gym membership. My friend let me borrow his P90X DVDs, and (loosely) worked out to the videos 3-4 times a week. I also took up fasted running in the morning 2 times a week. Within 6 months, I got down to 300lbs. Most of my diet consisted of Oatmeal, Eggwhites, Chicken breast, Broccoli, Nuts, Peanut Butter, Salad and Whey Protein. Losing 80lbs in the year and a half felt amazing, but I was still overweight, I was still fat, and even though I had lost weight, I lacked a lot of energy and strength.
After about a two week break from doing P90X. I had gained about 5lbs back, So I decided go back to it. That's when things started taking a dive. After a month of exercising and dieting (I changed nothing) Not only did I not lose weight, but I gained another 5lbs. (Bringing me back up to 310lbs) A friend suggested I start doing weight training and not just Cardio based exercises. So I finally got a Gym membership and looked up several starting weight lifting programs. After a month of that. M-W-F of Lifting weights and Tues/Thurs doing cardio, I gained another 5lbs. Which I expected, because I had read that I would put muscle weight on. I did this for several months with little results until suddenly I got into a car accident which gave me a back injury. I couldn't lift anything heavy for about two months. When I was finally able to go back to the gym, I realized I gained another 10lbs (Now 325lbs). For four months I ate flawlessly and worked my ass off. The end result was me gaining another 10lbs "335lbs". Even though my upper body, chest and forearms seemed to be showing progress. I still had flabby upper arms and a huge gut, side saddles, and flabby thighs.
I was crushed and felt defeated. After extensive research and desperate.I went to the Doctor and I don't have diabetes or any series health issues other than my weight. So I went to a Weightloss Specialist & Nutritionist. She advised me that I was eating too much and put me on a strict, 1500 calorie a day diet. Not only did it NOT work, but I had no energy to even lift weights anymore. I wasn't progressing, I was weaker. On top of that. I gained another 5lbs. That went on for 2 months. I started doing only cardio again for several months, I lost no weight, but didn't gain any either.
I decided to go to a different Nutritionist. This time, he said I wasn't eating NEARLY ENOUGH. Puts me on a diet of 3500 calories a day. This time I seemed to lose a little weight! After 3 months I dropped 15lbs. But that's when I threw my back out again and was bed ridden for another two weeks. I went to PT and was back in action in about a month. After that. Followed the same diet, tried different work out routines. I started to gain weight again instead of lose it... Went back to the nutritionist. Tells me to eat this and that with this much. 4 months later with casual workouts and cardio. I'm back up to 350lbs.
So here I am, I just turned 30 years old. And within 5 years, I went from losing nearly 100lbs, to gaining 50 back. I've tried less Calories, I've tried more calories. Eating this, eating that. I've tried doing only Cardio, only weights, Weights with Cardio. Nutritionist. Felt like EVERYTHING I've tried. I have only been gaining weight.
So as a last resort. I came here to try and see if other have had my problem. And if anyone can maybe shed some light on why this has happened.
