Long runs & Exercise

Hey guys!
So I've been wondering if the exercises I've been doing will help my runs (endurance, speed). I start every morning at 5:30 to do step aerobics for 30 minutes. I've lost 20 lbs so far, but what I want is to improve my runs.

Will this exercise help me improve? If not, which other types?

The best way to improve your running is to, we'll...RUN! I'm horrible at running and endurance is total crap. My friend, however, suggested I do something he calls "60/120s." Basically, run 60 seconds, walk 120 seconds, and repeat. I start off with a 5 min warm-up walk, then do that 4 times, then another 5 min for cooldown. I do it about three times a week, and my endurance has slowly but surely increased.
