Long Jogs OR Short Sprint OR Both?

Hello, as most people, I have a goal for the mile run by the end of august. I need to get my mile run down to 6 minutes. I've been using the same routine for about almost three months now. I would "run" half a mile, jog a quarter mile, and "run" the last quarter mile. The fastest I've ever gotten so far for the mile is 7:30 minutes. I just cannot get it lower than that. I don't seem to be getting any faster. I would tire out incredibly quickly. I'm running out of breath after my first quarter mile already. Should I add some hard long jogs to build up more cardio? Or should I add quarter mile sprints? Or both?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeff

I know a very affective way to get a lower mile time is to get better at a longer distance. Try pushing yourself in the mile and a half or the 2 miler. Mix in with that some hard 800 meter runs for HIIT.

Why are you tiring out so quickly? Maybe you need to try some longer runs to get your wind a little better established. As far as lowering your time, the only way I know to do that is sprints....so maybe do some HIIT or just practice sprinting for a bit. Good luck!!

If you want to run under 6 minutes you need to learn to run that pace...

I would say do intervals... at 6 minute pace... and also longer runs between interval work outs... at a slow pace...

Also there was a guy at I think men's health or one of those magazine that had a blog about his attempt to run a 5 minute mile and how he trained to achieve it (not sure if he did)... you might look at that...

ok here it is...

that is day 94 in his attempt... he is doing 200 repeats..

Yeah, I haven't been doing any hard long jogs at all. I thought they were a waste of time, but I guess I'll have to put them into my training schedule now.
