Long fast walk or really short run?

Hi everyone,

For the past month, I have been using the treadmill 3 times a week for long fast-paced walks: 5 minute warmup - 60 minutes @ 6.5km (4.0 miles) - 5 min cooldown (I think I could go even longer than this if I wanted!). If I turn up the speed just enough to force me to start jogging though, my lungs get exhausted really quickly! (I've had asthma my whole life which has been under control for the past 2-3 years, but I think my lungs are definately weaker than average).

I first got into this to re-reveal my pre-college (pre-too-many-beer-and-pizza) stomach which I'm sure my current routine will take care of eventually, but am I missing an opportunity to strengthen my lungs? If I "tough it out" with jogging, will it be at the expense of fat-burning given that it will cut down my time exercising by 50 minutes? (at least initially) I also didn't want to wait until I reached my fat-burning goal to try jogging only to realize that it's still as hard and I should have been working at it the whole time!

Thanks in advance!

i would carry on walking but aim to be exhausted around 45 mins. That is a perfect amount of time to exercise. Slowly increase your speed until you are shattered by 45 mins. Gradually you will turn it into a jog.
