Long Distance Necessary?

This has probably been asked a few times, but once more wont hurt ;) I've finally found a workout that I love, for the first time in my life. I'm doing 2-3 days of intervals (20mins approx), 2 - 3 days in the weight room, and 1 - 2 days doing body pump classes - no more than 6 workouts per week, and no less than one day between weights. My goal is to get fit (this is my biggest priority) and to lose weight. The fitness goal is for when I do my basic training for the army reserves later this year.

My question is whether it's necessary to do long distance running/cardio to get a good cardio workout? The reason is that, as I said, I've got a great workout that's motivating me, and the last thing I want is to be put off by 45min+ cardio workouts. That's hell on earth for me - I just find them plain boring! I love my interval training, and love going for a good mountain bike ride once or twice a fortnight (generally about 2 - 4 hours of hard riding) and I really dont want to lose my motivation! Thanks.

Chris,

cardio doesn't have to exceed 20-30 mins to be extremely effective. slow, plodding cardio for 45 mins isn't the ticket to fat loss anyways.

do some research on HIIT if you haven't already. one CAN incorporate interval training into their weight training sessions to the extent it doubles as cardio. couple'd with your body pump class 2x a week should be plenty of activity.

Now, just make sure you're eating properly. Food is 60% of the weight loss equation, if not more.

Bodypump? If this is the same class I've seen, you grab some really light weight and do an hour or so of "closed chain movements" with a light barbell. Consider this cardio for medium endurance levels.

I agree with Malkore, HIIT is far more effective (especially for guys). True HIIT (High intensity interval training) will not last more than 10 minutes. If you are doing more, you are fooling yourself. It ain't HIGH intensity.

Body-pump is good for ppl who need entertainment and enjoy a group workout.
Its better than nothing but you'd be better off keeping your CV and strength training seperate.

I figured as much, but to be honest, I just really enjoy it!

Thanks for the replies.
