Sport Light, diet, and fat free foods

Am I safe having a root beer float with fat free frozen vanilla yogurt and diet root beer every now and then? What do people think about "diet" and "light" foods? I've been told by several people that it is better to drink regular soda every now and then, rather than to drink diet sodas most of the time. I don't drink diet sodas every day, but when I find myself craving a sweet and fizzy drink I always reach for something diet. I usually like to buy low carb tortillas, fat free cottage cheese, light string cheese, light chips (the kind with olestra! ), and many other "light" foods. I'm always too afraid to put anything in my mouth that doesn't have the words "Fat free", "Light", or "Diet" written on it. I feel like these are "safe" foods to eat whenever I am craving any type of junk food.
But are they really safe?
So, my question is:

Is it really worth it to buy all of these products?

It will vary from product to product. The best thing is to read all the nutrition labels. A lot of "fat free" stuff is higher in calories than the original foods. So it's not necessarily better.

Soda is just bad all around. However I do think diet soda is better than regular. The sugar content is lower and that counts for something.

Well, I'm no health expert, but eating or drinking something like light chips or diet sodas instead of the full-fat/sugar real thing is whole lot better.

So if you were craving something chocolatey and instead of eating a whole pint of Ben&Jerry's you opted for a splenda crunch bar that is definitely an improvement!

No, it's not the best food choice and I don't think you should eat these types of foods eveyday , but Hey! nobody's perfect.
