Lactose Free Whey Protien?

I seem to be somewhat lactose intolerant. I've never been tested for it, but skim milk gave me lots of digestive problems in the past. Anyways, I was reading on bodybuilding.com in a Q&A section where someone said that their whey protein was causing a lot of stomach cramping. I bought ON 100% Whey Protein, but have barely used it b/c everytime I have stomach pains and horrible gas. On bodybuilding.com they said to use whey protien that was lactose free. The brand they offered was Biochem 100% Whey protein.
Bodybuilding.com - Biochem 100% Whey Protein - Only 4g Of Carbs! On sale now!
Does anyone use this or know of any other lactose free whey protein?

Have you taken a look at what is in that Biochem "lactose-free" protein powder? Preservatives, artificial color, artificial flavor or artificial sweeteners ... not something I want to ingest.

That's odd that you think you are lactose-intolerant. Are you sure you're not dairy intolerant? The reason I'm asking is because whey protein isolates (not the "concentrate") contain very little lactose. Most are 98-99% lactose-free.

I'm just wondering which ON whey protein powder you used? This one is pretty good: I've never felt gassy from this protein powder.

That being said, I have heard that a lot of people do get a bit gassy from protein powders, especially when they start drinking it. You might want to ease up on how much protein powder you're using to start off with and see whether or not that helps.

If you are truly lactose intolerant, your best bet is to try egg protein powders (I'd stay away from the soy protein powders). Optimum Nutrition makes a pretty decent one .

Not that I'm pushing ON on you ... it's just the only protein powder I've ever had any success with -- gastrointestinally speaking ;)

The stuff I get has only 0.5g of carb per serving (the CMDI), and no added garbage in it. ON has 3g, of which only one is sugar, supposedly, and actually does have lactase added in.

Might not be the lactose, though, as there's a lot of other trash in there.

Recommend you try:

Notice the 0g fat, 0g carb. Nothing in there at all but milk protein. The link is to a sampler pack that's a pretty good deal and lets you try out all the flavors, but if you can drink plain whey or plain CMDI that'd be even better I guess, but me I loves chocolate banana like I loves breathing. Anyway, their whey is about the same price as ON, minus the added junk and poor quality. Sure you can find other products, I just happen to know this one is good.

The one they referred you to on bb.com in place of the ON is also packing unnecessary filler. -_-

P.S. They also have excellent prices on fish oil and some other stuff, might want to have a look around, depending on what you end up paying for shipping. If you already know what flavors you like, you might consider just getting whatever amount you want. The premium flavors are really good. I haven't tried the regular. Oh, and be sure to Google a 5% discount coupon code.

Thanks for all the responses, I'll give some of those a try.

In answer to your questions, I really don't know what's wrong w/ my body but when I was growing up I drank 1% & 2% milk 3-4 glasses a day then when I was 19 I started drinking skim milk and I was healthy and active, but had bad digestive problems and had to have a colonoscope. I stopped drinking milk and the problems stopped.

I still eat cottage cheese, yogurt, and cheese everyday and don't have any problems with them. I have been putting skim milk in my oatmeal lately and warming it up and it seems to be ok in a very small amount.

I tried using cookies & cream flavor of ON (our local GNC only offered that or Chocolate for that brand). I only used 1 scoop w/ water or soy milk and drank it every other day after working out for about 3 weeks. I thought it might have been the soy milk but I was gassy when I drank it w/ water too.

I would like to find out what it is that is causing me problems, but Doc bills would be too high for him to tell me that skim milk & I don't get along!

Sounds like it's your basic lactose intolerance, and not an allergy to the milk proteins, as you wouldn't be able to eat cheese were that the case (cheese contains milk proteins but almost no lactase, - the whey has been removed at some point).

Most humans become lactose intolerant to some degree after childhood, as the body begins producing less of the necessary enzymes, due to its expectancy that milk will no longer be a staple in the diet.

I have been putting skim milk in my oatmeal lately and warming it up and it seems to be ok in a very small amount.

Yup. Look for an actual pure isolate and you should be just fine. For the record, a friend of mine has roughly the same level of intolerance as you, and she's able to handle trueprotein's whey and casein products just fine, while unable to handle ON, BSN, EAS, InterACTIVE or Kaizen.

Hey guys! I finally got that sample pack in the mail yesterday. Has anyone else ordered it? I was pretty confused when I opened it. It was a bunch of ziploc baggies w/ the flavor hand wrote on it w/ magic marker. There was no nutrient info or directions or anything. Is this the way they package all their supplements? To me it looked like someone ripping me off by sending coolaid in ziplock baggies. I tried the chocolate and it tasted just like cocoa powder.

Hahahaha. :D

They don't send you plastic containers and such unless you ask. (And don't charge you for them, either.) It's one of the things I like about them. It's perfectly real. The nutritional info's on the website. But I'll save you some time:

And here's a link to where I got it from:

True Protein | High Quality Nutrition and Protein Supplements

That's just a sample pack, but yeah. Each baggie is 50g of whey. Try all the flavors, see which if any you like. When ordering the stuff itself you can choose whether you want flavor, how much, any additives (vitamins, minerals and such), and yes, whether you want packaging like a plastic tub and a scoop (the tub will have the nutritional info on it).

It tasted like cocoa powder 'cause it's just that good. ^_^

FOCUS when did you jump on the trueprotein.com train?? don't forget there is a section that you can create your own mix, you can mix specific blends for specific times of the day or activitys if you like. great place i think, however I don't know how accurate the mixes acutally are, I would definatly like to know how they are doing that.
