knee pain

Hello I have been working out on a treadmill for 7 months exclusively 5 days a week, and never had serious aches or pains, I started out easy doing what I could comfortably, and increased speed and distance gradually still maintaining what was comfortable, I currently do 4 8 1/2 minute miles with a 1/4 mile walk as a warm up and 1/4 mile walk to cool down. I started out at 250 lbs
and now I am 190 lbs at 6ft tall. at 42 years old I am feeling like I did at 20 and love the running, But last week I was into my third mile and started to feel some pain in my right knee mainly when extention occurs the pain is primarily on the outside directly below the kneecap and seems to go around the outside up the back of the leg somewhat into the buttox. I took 3 days off and ran with some discomfort yesterday now today the pain is to intense to run, I have no pain at any other time walking and normal activities present no pain, I would love some info on what to do with this injury.
I would hate to give up running
 
You don't have to give up running. Sounds like you need to work on your stabilizers and make sure there is no imbalance between your abductors/adductors. Are there personal trainers at your gym who can show you some knee strengthening exercises?

You can do knee extensions (not in a way to push the most way but more focusing on really contracting the vastus lateralis/medialis). Also make sure to stretch your glutes and ITB frequently as this can pull on your knee.

Have you considered that you could have an anatomical imbalance in your body that is causing the knee pain?

Strengthening the knee may not make your pain go away if there are imbalances in you muscular system that is effecting your gait pattern. I came across a site that does a pretty good job going over running efficiency.
