Knee pain from running

I've recently starting running on the treadmill at the gym. I have run outside (on tarmac) for a couple of years and not had any trouble, however since trying this at the gym I'm struggling with knee pain particularly in one knee.

Whilst I'm actually running it isnt too bad, but when I slow down to a walk the aching begins and it leaves my knee feeling weak and achy for a few days afterwards.

Could it be that I'm doing something wrong when running on the treadmill, or is it just not good for you?

And is there any warm up/other excerise I could do to improve this?

Thanks in advance.

There is a difference in treadmill and real world running and most who love one loath the other, myself included.
The band you are running on is not the solid surface you are used to, it is a few millimetres above the solid part and also gives a bit. As such you will be trying to land on this as if it is tarmac and will only make contact a tiny bit later. This would seem too minor to matter but over a duration it becomes an issue.
There is also no variance in terrain, etc. which means you are repeating the same movement continuously unlike on the road where many things change constantly.
I would say find less cushioned footwear that are more suited to treadmills, and find a running shoe shop where you can test this and ideally run in front of a mirror for a while to see if there are obvious issues, like lifting arms over sides of machine etc.
You can get used to both, but as someone who hates treadmills I am possibly not the best to guide you.

Yes, the experience of running on a treadmill and outdoor running is very different. It has to do with each one's adaptability and emotional state of wellbeing.
In case of join aches, immerse your feet in bucket of hot water (a little above normal temperature) for atleast 15 minutes. Remember to mix rock salt in hot water. Rock salt when mixed with hot water; heals achy joints faster, and kills bad odor and eliminates any bacteria or germs.

Do you stretch before running on the treadmill?

The rock salt suggestion is a good one. I have done epsom salt baths before to help with healing after working out.

when you run, lift your knees, coaches always told me this and i never listened because i was always too tired too.
and one day i couldnt stand my knee pain so i was just getting by my usual morning run, and this old guy yelled from across the street to lift my knees, and so for the next couple of days i started to re-teach myself how to run but by lifting my knees higher up, and it helped GREATLY with the pains. and i asked my coach today about my knees clicking, which apparently isnt a good thing, lol, and he told me that i should strengthen the muscles above my knees by going on machines such as those mechanical bikes, so you should try that too.
