Knee/foot pain

I have been working out a lot, about 3 hours every day. But I am afraid I overdid it because now both my foot hurts (the arch of the foot) and my knee.

I am wondering about your experiences with these types of injuries, how long it took you to recover, and some alternative exercises I can do.

I've been doing so good with weight loss too, burning over 1k calories a day by exercising. I don't know what to do now. Eating a low calorie diet is very difficult for me as I am always hungry.

Sounds like your body is telling you to ease off a bit. Have you been working up to this insane regiment?

Ideally, I would lay off the running for a while. If you still want to be active, I would suggest swimming, or something else that takes pressure off the legs.

Eating low calories is relaly not difficult if you eat the right foods. Try and focus on foods high in fiber and protein. These will leave you with a fuller longer. Check out the stickies for some food info.

I kind of worked up to it, my foot actually started hurting from simple walking. I am pretty overweight (I was 230 when I started). My knees started hurting from a stationary bike. I feel like my body is falling apart.

I would love to swim, but unfortunately I don't have access to a facility where I can do that. Do you have other suggestions for what I can do?

I try to eat mostly lean meats and veggies, but it's the amount that's a problem. I'm just always so hungry, and ready to eat everything in sight.

Gotcha - it sounds like it may just be a strain issue. Listen to your body - if you overwork an injury, you will be sidelined for a lot longer than the few days it would take to ease off exercising. As for full body exercises, you could invest in an at home dvd, or a Wii fit game if you have that. Oh yea, you can google "death by bodyweight" and there are some really killer exercises you can do that don't require any weights or gym memberships.

As for the hunger issue; the clean foods has really helped me curb my snacking. Other than that, make sure you drink a lot of water to keep your system hydrated. Also, before you snack, ask yourself if you are really hungry, or just bored. If it is boredom (which is usually is for me), then it will go away in a few minutes. Stay strong - the results are worth it!

That's a really good point :)

Hi, Have you thought about investing in some better training shoes? This may help a great deal. When I was doing marathon training, I was quite heavy and the arches of my feet were in agony, but then I went to a shop and chatted to the people there, they looked at how I walked and ran, they were pretty impressive actually and gave me a fantastic pair of shoes that really helped. It didnt' cure the pain, but it certainly reduced it.

If the pain is getting to you, try taking some ibuprofen, its a pretty good anti inflammatory. But rest is the best thing you can do, lay off impact or fast walking for a while.

I reckon the comment about home DVD's was a very good idea, I did this for a while too, you can find some good ones that don't stress your joints very much and you can do it in the comfort of your living room.

Good luck!

Another thing I've heard is that if your feet hurt, try rubbing your calves - I'm afraid I don't remember exactly where I read it, but supposedly it's a trick that works for people hiking across Europe & such ;)

I like kick boxing DVDs - but I have some knee problems myself so I wouldn't do the jumping parts.

I also like some of the "Walk Away the Pounds" although these days I generally just go outside.

Do you have access to an elliptical machine? Those are easier on your joints than running or even the bike. (Supposedly anyway - they're what I generally use at my gym for cardio)

Also - my boredome vs hunger test - am I hungry enough to eat plain celery with no PB. If I am... than it's hunger. ;)

Was the store you went to a special foot store, or a regular shoe store?

Thanks

I do have an elliptical, but unfortunately my knee hurt on it as well :( I haven't been working out for about a week now, and I think it's getting better.

I think I did it to myself because I was working out for 2 hours straight. Sigh

Hi there,

The shop was a speciality shop in London, in Victoria, it was called "Run and Become". It was brilliant, all the staff there were experts in Gait, really really cool. I suggest you dont' go to a mainstream shop but look around on google, wherever you are, and do a search on speciality running shops.

It makes all the difference to have the correct foot gear, I'm telling you. Shame your knee hurt on the eliptical as well, how does it feel if you use a recumbent exercycle? (as opposed to the upright one, I just find they tend to make my bum numb and then my feet go all tingly)

My uncle is having bad foot pain since last couple of months. Initially he was not taking it seriously but pain has increased in last few weeks. So we are considering many treatment options and I have heard that anodyne therapy or infrared light therapy is best among them. Any views/suggestions?
