Sport Kiwi reactions

Sport Fitness
So I remember when I was little I ate so many kiwifruits that I started to bleed in my mouth. I still get a weird feeling in my mouth, and tons of people I know get it too. What causes this? Is there something about the kiwi that screws with your mouth?

I read something on this a little while ago, luckily I've found it on wiki for you,

Raw kiwifruit is also rich in the protein-dissolving enzyme actinidin, (in the same family of thiol proteases as papain), which is commercially useful as a meat tenderizer but can be an allergen for some individuals. Specifically, people allergic to latex, papayas or pineapples are likely to be allergic to kiwifruit also. Reactions include sweating, tingling and sore mouth; swelling of the lips, tongue and face; rash; vomiting and abdominal pain; and, in the most severe cases, breathing difficulties, wheezing and collapse. The most common symptoms are unpleasant itching and soreness of the mouth, with the most common severe symptom being wheezing. Severe symptoms are most likely to occur in young children.

if you take the skin off it helps!

haha

anyhow, once about a year ago when I dried a bunch of the skins and tried to smoke them- I got blisters on my lips from the lighter. Very hard to keep the stuff lit!

Try banana skins buddy...dry them out on a low heat in the oven and then skin em up:jumping:

as the first reply said it has a protein breakdown enzyme. So obviously if you eat 15 kiwi's in one sitting it might break down some of the tissue in your mouth, causing your mouth to burn and bleed. :D Now you may be sensitive to it or something like that.
