keeping hydrated on a long run

I managed a 7 mile run the other night for the first time ever (took just under an hour to do it) and was woundering how do you manage to keep the fluids up while pushing yourself so hard. I run on a treadmill once a week (or if the weather is really really foul) and have tried keeping a bottle to hand but struggle to drink from it with out getting a stich or feeling sick because of the way its sits in my stomach. I'm aiming to run a marathon next year so this is something i need to master.

Cyclists have backpack like accessories that have a tube coming out of them that you can drink water from while exercising. You might wanna give that a try. Personally I don't drink while I'm running long distances for the same reasons as you, it just doesn't sit well with me while I'm in the process of running.

drinking water before yourun may not always be the best idea...especially if youve had kids na dwill need a potty break soon! :) or if youre running any time of competition...also be sure that when oure done running start off my drink lukewarm water and not cold water so you dont get dizzy...

you could try gatorade as well...i know i dont have all the answers but would be ntersted in hearing more sggestions...

those camelbaks are really good, i put one in my rucksack if i'm doing a long walk so i don't have to stop every 20mins for a sip of water, never thought of taking it on a run, I'll have to get a smaller one and see how it goes.

I think this will be an important thing for me to master because if i do a marathon on a warm day i'll dehydrate faster than a worm caught out in the sun (and probably be as red as one)

I'm going to get a big one with the backpack and everything for hiking, hunting, etc. I'll get issued a small one before I go to Iraq though.

I was just about to mention that the military uses them in Iraq.

You should be staying hydrated all throughout the day, if you drink some water than have to go to the bathroom soon or very frequently throughout the day, then you aren't consistent with your water intake. If you have a gallon of water a day spaced out, then after about 2 weeks your body starts to get on track with using it rather than having you go to the bathroom a million times a day.

I like GA80's idea as well if it's still a problem for you. Good question.
