Just starting to use treadmill

Hi everyone...

After years of not working out because of a very demanding job ( movie producing - and I know bad excuse) I weighed 275 lbs ( Im 6'1" and 36 yr old).

Well I had surgery a few months ago for something unrelated to weight and lost 50 lbs...this has motivated me to continue to lose weight to get down to around 200 ( ive always been large... was fullback in HS) from my current 225.

Anyway my problem is this... I really only have a half hour a day.. as it is I only get to sleep maybe 5 hrs a night and I work 7 days a week...so even fitting that half hour in is hard because my phone is constantly ringing. Working less just isnt an option at this point.

Ive been using the treadmill at home doing the following:

3 min @ 3mph
5 min @ 3.5 mph
5 min @ 4 mph
5 min @ 4.5 mph
5 min @ 4 mph
5 min @ 3.5 mph
2 min @ 3 mph

so my question is... knowing I can only spare half hour a day what is the most efficient use of that time for maximum weight loss ?

thanks in advance for any replies.

Shut off your phone...
If yuo are really dedicated and committed to losing more weight, take that half hour out of your day and dedicate it to your goal. THEY CAN WAIT!
Secondly, put an incline on the treadmill to maximize calories burned.

Shut off your phone! =-) That's really good advice. I would also suggest you part far away so you can get your warm up in before you 'hit the gym'.

Thanks for the responses.

I do shut my phone off..what Im really asking is if I only have a half hour per day what is the best way to maximize weight loss in that hour?

If I try to increase my max speed from 4.5mph to 5mph+ am I actually working off more calories/fat or am I only gaining cardio benefits?

Is there a better method to losing weight than the treadmill?

Those are really the questions I need answered.

Well i run 3 miles in 36 minutes and some would call that slow so you can definately get a good run in 30 minutes it may take a while to get in the shape to go that fast but keep trying and you will get there, and i would definately say running is probably one of the best ways to lose weight and stay fit. I dont think there is a better method to losing weight.

I think the simplest, most straightforward advice is run as fast as your body will let you and run the whole 30 minutes. What you have right now is good, but once it gets easy, definitely up the max speed. Also, you can try other methods like increasing speed the ENTIRE time (increasing in smaller increments) and here's one of the interval workouts I did in XC -

Run 5 min
Jog 1 min
Run 4 min
Jog 1 min
Run 3 min
Jog 1 min
Run 2 min
Jog 1 min
Run 1 min

That is less than thirty minutes and it is a very good workout. All of my friends and I were literally dripping sweat after this. For the "run" portions, make a conscious effort to quicken your stride rate. At the same time, though, the "run" isn't a sprint. The nice thing about this workout is that the "run" parts get shorter as you go, so you expend the most energy when you still have energy. It's okay if your jog parts are pretty slow - as long as you keep your head up and keep good form, go just slow enough to feel rested.
