Just how strong is the Endorphin-thing?

Okay....I gotta ask this. Yes, I went to college, but I never really got into messing around with drugs. I drank a bit, tried a bit of weed here and there...but never played aroudn with any of the hard stuff: I was too scared. Heck, I never even sucked helium out of balloons!

After I get done with my long rides or my Spin/Run/Swim routine....I FEEL AMAZING....I'm all hyper, happy and just high on life. So, for all you freaks who've done lines, dropped acid, ate peyote or whatever you did.....just how potent & sweet is the Endorphin-thing as compared to narcotic drugs?

Btw...I've read in several sources that cardio exercise for an hour is as equally effective as the most potent anti-depressant drugs they prescribe!

I dunno man...but when I get my cardio-head on, ain't nothing gets me down! ....discuss.

I agree man.....but you MUST try the helium (hours of fun):)

You can't compare natural highs to chemical ones I'm afraid, the chemical ones are so much stronger. Narcotics can make you feel indestructible (think Tony Montana at the end of Scarface) and like your brain is working at the speed of sound. The only natural high I can think of that has the same kind of impact is an adrenaline rush after something like a near death experience, the ones that are so strong you have a period of dark depression afterwards as your brain needs to restore it's chemical balance

As for Peyote, LMAO, that's nothing like any natural high, time and space can seem warped and the park benches start talking to you, wierd ^^^^!!

LMAO!!! I've only had plants talk to me. That was when I was walking down the yellow brick road.

I used to dabble when I was younger. I agree with CCR. Also you're chances of a 3 some increase 50 fold when you roll with a couple chicks. LOL

CCR hits it on the nose. There are a lot of drugs that are way stronger than anything your body can produce. I'm thinking of things like heroin or coke. It's insane how you feel on those. Even prescription painkillers are stronger and intense. But I have done exercises where I get a mild feeling of being high like on an opiate. One exercise I used to get that on is the deadlift. I would get crazy euphoric and get a body buzz going as well.

well, the effects of the type of drugs you mentioned do not compare to the natural high of endorphins. Anti depressant drugs do not make you "high" and would not make you feel as good as you do after exercising...... but I am only speaking from my own experience.

I can't say anything about the other types of drugs (like heroin, acid, meth, or any of the illegal ones that cause a "high") but anti depressants, don't hold a candle to exercising. I traded in my meds for exercising, and it is 100% better than anything any doctor can prescribe.

They can help you out of a funk, but it's a temporary fix. Exercise is forever :D

cheers,
Diane

What kind of an idiot tries to compare narcotics to the 'high' you get while exercising????...oh yeah; I'm that idiot. :D

Nahh...I've never done lines, shot-up or eaten peyote or much anything but drank too much (which resulted in horrific dehydration, naseau, dizziness and the mother of all hang-overs). Having never really "done" drugs, I was just curious. Of course it comes to no surprise that exercise isn't quite as strong as meth....but still, an interesting topic to touch on.

I rather wish Chillen & FF would weigh-in on this subject....:D

Chocolate helps sometimes. Especially if you get in the mood.

As for drugs, I never tried it. I don't want to and probably never will try one out. I might try it one day if I turn into a hippie, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

As for post exercise, I feel like I'm the king of the world. After a 5 mile run or a 2 mile swim, I feel like I can do anything. I get really excited.

You know what I love when I swim? When I pass someone like I'm changing lanes in the pool. It feels awesome.

I also love it when I'm at the gym, and you doing pull ups and some one is watching you and when you're done, you see them trying it out. I had one guy follow me around for a little while. He never said anything to me, but every time I was done, he would do whatever I was doing.

It's not that synthetic meds are stronger, it's because our body regulates the release. Taking a 30mg oxy obviously isn't comparable to 10ng/dL of a natural endorphin.

Yeah.....it's called a "stalker"...next time try for a female! ;)

I enjoy swimming too. I'm not particularly fast, but I just keep going & going. A lot of it is the technique. I've seen several people jump in and use their fresh power to run side by side with me for 2-3 laps, but then they stop and stand there panting. It's amazing how much a difference it makes when you use technique...a smooth rolling action, extended reaches in front of you and just keep that forward movement going. It also helps having the riding-legs; I get a really solid push off the wall and can cruise that almost a quarter of the lap! I also like doing the Butterfly all the way across and then flipping it and doing the backstroke all the way back. Most people have an ugly inefficeint backstroke. Swimming is good, few people do it. You gotta try adding an underwater ipod to the mix...love it! :D

Opps..sorry, back to drugs.......:)

No form of exercise will ever have me sitting at the drive through window laughing for what feels like twenty minutes while the people making my order spit in my food...when I get around to ordering it.

And let's not even think about how many ^^^^sexual men you've accidently given pleasure to. Opps, did I say ^^^^sexual? I meant 'straight-challenged'....or perhaps I should just say men who have extrodinary taste & style in window treatments.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry....my bad. :D :yelrotflmao:

This might be a silly question but is it possible that my body doesn't make endorphins when I work out? I work out but I just don't get the high that people talk about and I was wondering if it is possible that my body just doesn't make endorphins.

I think you can compare natural highs to chemical highs very much so. I think even, natural highs are even worse, because you can quit narcotics, alcohol completely, cut them out, but you NEED physical activity in life so it becomes much harder.
I have an easily addictive personality, so i have had a lot of addictions to many things. I have to say my addiction to working out was one of the most destructive. It was more enjoyable than being intoxicated. If you get too deep into it, you do get really high like a drug would make you.
Yeah, the endorphins are strong. They feel good. But once it becomes too strong and forms into an addiction you can kill yourself faster than any drug will do, and you can become delusional faster than any drug will do. There are many more horrible destructive factors involved here than with any drug.

No, i think it takes quite awhile to get up to that. For some people it takes a long time.
You probably feel amazing, more energetic after working out right? It increases your confidence, and mental well being, you feel good about bettering your body, you just feel positive after a good workout? Well that is the high in mild forms. It can get more intense than that. If not you probably still have some catching up to do in order to get there.

You hear all the time how people despise working out, how it is not fun at all, so it could take quite awhile, of forcing yourself to do it, and i think you need to get up to the adrenalin and enjoy the burn. But working out is a natural anti depressant. It is the number one cure for all mental illnesses, but doctors do not tell you that, they just want to make you into a pill popper. Just like if you are depressed, and force yourself to get active, you will feel better. If you workout regularly on a schedule, you will find if you miss a workout, you might feel in a slump, this is because your body now knows it feels better with the endorphins of physical activity.

People do not always enjoy the feel of the burn of lifting heavy weights. They count the seconds until their repetitions are over so they can stop. If you stick through it enough times, you will eventually learn to love that intense, almost painful, feeling, and especially how amazing the burn is when you finish. Same for cardio, most people despise the feeling as soon as they lose their breath, they despise the feel of sweat even, they despise the cramps, they despise the tired feeling of muscles, and the rapid heart beat, but once you do it enough times, you will love all those things. Once you start enjoying it for awhile, the high comes. You'll love the burn.
