Just Another Newbie

Hiya - just wanted to introduce myself. I've been reading Fitness magazine off and on for a while now. I'm trying to get back into shape after falling off the wagon for a while. I have pretty bad knees and I used to run a lot, so it's been difficult to find something that keeps me as active. Anyways, looks like a great community and its a great way for me to keep myself motivated. Looking forward to chatting with you all! :D

Welcome aboard!

:)

I am a newbee here also. If you miss the running then try inline skating. You'll get great cardio and burn lots of calories. The best part is inline is easy on the knees but really works the glutes, quads, hips and lower back. I hear lot's of former runners are doing it. I am mixing strength exercises and skating with the goal of eventually competing in a marathon like Disney. You can check out my diary to see how my routine is progressing. The Greenetuckian Files. Good luck and welcome.

Thanks for the tip! I've heard that in line skating is great for you. I've tried it a couple times, but am rather uncoordinated whtne it comes to ice skating or roller skating. How long did it take you to get used to the new motions?

I had a bit of an unfair advantage. I learned to skate years ago in the 70s & early 80s on quads. We started back skating at the rinks in Dec. of 05 once again on quads. My first outdoor and really inline experience was with a junk pair of hard plastic skates I gave $2 for. Since then I have progressed quite a bit. My girlfriend Sheri and her daughter are also progressing. My son Kegan has skated inline for years and helped me in the beginning quite a bit.

The best advice I can give you is to check out and do not buy cheap skates. Buy a good fitness skate from a reputable company like Rollerblade, K2 or Soloman. Do not buy a pair at a big box retailer and I don't know where you live at but if there is a skate shop or roller rink near you check things out there. Roller rinks usually rent skates cheap.

thanks Greenetuckian, I will check out that forum. I actually recommended someone on this board to talk to you since you seemed to have some history in the sport. Perhaps you've already found the thread :)

I did have someone from VB contact me and I gave them the best information I could. I haven't seen them show up on the AAS forum but I hope they do get rolling. It really is a lot of fun and really good exercise.
