joints 'popping' what to do. help.

ok both knees when pulled up make a snap type noise most of the time, and one elbow makes a pop noise doing chinups for example. only under a lot of pressure. sometimes my ankle makes the pop noise when walking. my joints are all bad. i dont know why. i do a lot of running so i doubt this helps or does it.

what can i do to keep or make my joints healthy? i dont want to get dammage done to them anymore.

I don't think running will do much harm to your elbow, but you are right that it probably isn't good for your ankle or knee. Mine are bad, but I run anyway as well. One of the things that I have used that helps is a Gluchosamine/Chondroitin/MSM combo supplement from GNC. I didn't want to give up running, and this has allowed me to run without the pain - and all my joints just feel better now.

Another thing that you can do to help is make sure your form is good, and make sure that your equipment is sufficient. If you are running poorly, or your shoes don't work with your foot type or running style you will be in more pain than you need to be in. Get some shoes professionally fitted (if you haven't already) and I bet the running will be easier and your legs will like you more.

In some people, snapping and popping in the joints is normal and is not a problem as long as it goes symptomless. Does this snapping cause you pain? My main concern would be the knees, as they are a weight-bearing joint. You may have abnormal patellar tracking (ie your knee cap does not move as smoothly in the front of your knee as it should, to put it simply). If you are getting pain from the snapping, you should get a consult from a physio or athletic therapist and they will suggest some exercises and stretches that might help. There may be many causes, so you would need a more complete assessment. Often, normal patellofemoral tracking is disturbed by muscle imbalances, especially the inside (medial) part of the quads (VMO) being weaker compared to the outside (lateral).
Have it checked out...

Joint pain is maddening ... I know all too well. I agree wholeheartedly about the Glucosamine. I take it in liquid form ... tastes like rotting death but quickand painless if you throw it in some juice.

If there is pain associated with the noises, I'd humbly suggest trying out Celebrex. It has been a miracle worker for me, and I've sufferered from joint pain for 12 years. It allows me to run sprints and do squats, when I'd otherwise be whining just walking around. :D

Hi - Popping joints, especially knees are because you have bunched up your soft connective tissue, of the muscles, in your legs - and they are now pulling on the tendons across the joint and so you have much too much accumulated shortness in the structure. If you get a good deep massage, and eat a lot of fresh green leafy vegetables and fruits, you can stretch a lot of it out if you have great stretches. See my website's free booklets -- great info-- On home page right side menu, right below testimonials (incl Olympic Athletes) read the next 3 booklets - Sports Medicine, Improving Athletic Performance and Fixing Accumulated Shortness. They are all a bit long but are excellent educators. There is also something about knees detailing abouot quads and hamstrings a little - on my What's New page - look for the little white box on the menu. You can look at my stretching video info page -- third iem from top of menu, and also featured a few screens from top on the left side big yellow box. I have been fixing structures with hands on and a special kind of stretching to enhance the hands on - for 20 years. Using Structural Integration Bodywork. Feel free to email or call me for more free info as well. My tel nr for 24 hr voicemail is all over the site. Lou

Reasons for Joints 'popping'

Due to message limit this is in point form
Several reasons of joints popping:
  • adhesions or scarring in connective tissue causing abrasion as it moves
  • poor alignment of joints due to lack of variety in training program and uneven tension development across joint
  • Reduced joint space due to high musclular tension around joint
Solutions - in same order as problems
  • Contact and Active Release practitioner in your area
  • Change your training routine to include more full-range and varied movements - check our Pavel Tsatsouline's work for inspiration )
  • Increase your flexibility and reduce your muscle tension by stretching properly (check out Kit Laughlin's work at ) and get regular sports massage

Fascial Re-Lengthening

Hi - I enjoyed the links from Seb's posting. For stretchers, as someone in the business for 20 years, I encourage you to do a method that spreads and lengthens the fascial soft connective tissue network from section to section of the body. Structural Integration Bodywork teaches these principles and does treat the entire body as a large multi-layer fascial suit. Theis material goes around amd through all the muscles, in which are embedded the muscle fibers connected to the nerves. To restore the body shape to its proper vull length and alignment, we need to relengthen and organize this putty like substance in which the neuro-musculat activity takes place. There are a number of Structural Integration sites on my links page, of and on my home page and free articles page menus there is Sports Medicine, Fixing Accumulated Shortness and Improving Athletic Performance. The Sports Medicine Article gives a number of Olympic Athlete testimonials and also defines the major differences between fascial lengthening and whole body re-organization, and neuro-muscular untightening, including the very effective neuro-muscular method PNF. My stretching video page also clarifies some of this, and there is an article about The Fascial Form on the Free Articles page. Lou
