I've made up my mind, I'm joining the YMCA...

So, I wanted to get a membership for my neighborhood pool, but I just found out today that it will cost me $950. $400 for the initial membership fee, and $550 for the regular annual fee. And, it's only open 6 months out of the year. Because, I'm a poor college student, it would take me about 2 months to earn that much money.

I decided that I'm going to join the local YMCA. They have a pool, and they have a gym. They also have classes for members. It's also only $90 a month for a full family membership. Needless to say, it's a better deal, so I'm joining.

Basically, I just wanted to share this news with everyone. Pool prices are crazy, gym prices are crazy as well. I just had to find the least crazy price.

So is anyone here a member of the YMCA? What do you think of it? Is it any better than those "popular" fitness club chains?

I am a member of a local Y. Their free weight section is skimpy compared to a big chain, but they have lots of classes and lots of cardio machines. Mine has a pool. I mainly joined because we get a family price which is a lot less expensive than adding on for each family member at a chain club and there are no fitness centers with a pool near me.

I used to go to the YMCA all the time and loved it. I moved to a different state and a smaller town and get this...we have NO popular chain of gyms...they are all smaller mom and pop type places.

Good luck and enjoy.

I didn't know there was a Village People's 1993 Remix! I gotta have it!!! I wonder if it is only available by infomercial on late night tv...

Wow you're YMCA is more expensive then the one here. The family membership works out to $75/mo I think. I dont go there but I was considering it. Our regular gyms are around $85 for singles.

We join the town pool but it is about $300 for the family. $400 initial fee is ridiculous!

Doesnt your college have a gym? Both of mine have a pool and gym.

I’d go with the Y if that’s all you have, but $90 a month seems a little steep to me too ($1080/year, ouch). I’m a member at a local gym and the family memberships are $55/month if you sign up for a year. They do not have a pool, but they have classes constantly and also have tanning and a day care that are all included in the price. I joined as a single a little over a month ago on a special for $30/month (normally $35). I guess if a pool is a must have then it may just cost you an arm and a leg (which will make it very difficult to swim).

Young woman, there's a place you can go.
I said, young woman, when you're short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

DON'T DO IT! :eek2:

you will get athlete's foot, the hidden cameras will have vids of you all over the internet, the background music is actually hipnotic and brainwashes you into buying fruit smoothies, and worst of all - you may even end up like MarkMyWords if you continue to go long enough!

not worth the risk if you ask me. You are much to precious for such a stretch.

IMHO

Well, then how else am I supposed to swim?

wow, that gym fee seems insane! I pay $32 a month for Gold's...no pool though.

Does your college not have a gym you can use for free as part of the student fees you're already paying?

Keep in mind, I live in California. Plus the SF bay area is practically the second most expensive area in the state just below LA and San Diego.

Basically, a gym with a pool for 90 dollars a month is a good deal.

A membership at the 24 hour fitness, (that only has cardio equipment, no weight machines or freeweights) is $50 a month.

Oh, and the school gym and pool are only open to people taking the respective classes. You have to be in weight training to use the weight room, and you have to be in the swimming class to use the pool.
