I've got a tough question!

Hi there! If this is the wrong area for this question I apologize. But here’s what I’m trying to find out:

“If I know exactly how many calories I burn each day, and I know how many pounds I want to lose each week…how do I calculate how many calories I should be eating each day? Is there a website that can help me calculate this?”

Any information anyone can give me would be a great help. Thanks!

Well, you don't really need a website, just some pen and paper.

Here is a way to estimate how many calories you can "eat" in a day:

calories burned/ day= "X"
First, calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). google BMR calculator and type in your stats, it will give you some estimates. Use a couple different calculators, and take an average of the bunch. That is your BMR.
next What exercise do you do? 1 hour of running? If you use the calorie calculator on the machine, then use the number from the machine. What is the average per day you burn from exercising?

These two numbers above (BMR + calories burned per day exercising) are your total calories burned per day (roughly) which we will call "X".

Next, how many pounds do you want to lose per week? You need to use 3500 calories as an estimate. There are 3500 calories in a pound of fat. So if you want to lose two pounds per week, you need a (2 times 3500) 7000 Calorie deficit... still following?

Now, for the 'formula'... If "C" is calories consumed per week, and "X" is above, then C -(minus) X should be (-7000) or so. So if you burned (X) 20,000 calories, and ate 13,000 (C), it would be 13,000 - 20,000 = (-7000).

Now, 13,000 calories for the week consumed is about 1860 calories per day (I just took 13000/7). That means that if you eat about 1860 calories per day, and burn about 20000 calories per week, you should lose about 2 pounds per week..

Now, go work on some algebra! :) haha

Simply put, you need to burn about 3,500 calories to lose 1 lb of fat. The rest is simple math.

I appreciate the time and effort you put into your reply Melancholy but you totally lost me with the algebra. LOL! I REALLY just need a website that will let me plunk in all those numbers you mentioned and it'll do the calculating for me. These days it's all about time management for me, and I need things nice and simple and quick! But I really do want to thank you for taking the time to try and help me.

And ChefChiTown, thank you too, but that doesn't really tell me how much I should be eating while I'm working out to burn those 3500 calories per pounds I want to lose each week.

Thanks again you two!!!

If you know the number of calories you burn each day then subtract 500 calories from that number to get the number of calories you should eat daily to lose 1 lb per week. Subtract 1000 calories to get the number of calories you should eat to lose 2 lbs per week etc.

There is no calculator which will do all of that for you. The way Melancholy described is perfectly right, you will have to do a bit of work and find those calculators, get your numbers, and do the maths.

There is no magic formula because your numbers depend on various factors which have to be taken into consideration.

May I ask, how do you know EXACTLY how many calories you burn in a day if you don't even know your BMR?

Forget about algebra and math. If you start calculating things, you may end up stressed out. Just make some lifestyle changes and shed the excess pounds. Start a fruit and vegetables diet. Snack on nuts like almonds and walnuts. Fresh fruits and vegetables will act as antioxidants and provide you with essential nutrients. Walnuts have Omega 3 fatty acid. Increase your protein diet as they burn lots of calorie while digestion.

 ^ I disagree. It's good to know how much you need to eat in order to NOT eat too much, but also TO EAT ENOUGH so your body doesn't go into starvation mode.
You have to have a reasonable idea of how much you should eat.

I agree with Monster. It's useful to know where to start assessing yourself. It's understood that RMR and BMR are just estimates. But they are good to know.

If you don't even have the willpower to do simple math equation, where will you find the willpower to lose weight ? It's ridiculous... take 5 minutes of your time and do it wtf?
