Okay I have to lose alot of weight and i'm only 17. I went to the doctor and he said i have the signs of a possible onset of type2 diabetes if I don't change my lifestyle, which I currently am starting. THats pretty much it...

Hey :)

Welcome. I'm 26 years old, and I have around 60-70 pounds to lose. I have type II diabetes, and it was due to my extreme weight gain when I was 20-21 years old. I was 21 years old when I went to the hospital and my blood sugar was 1100. They told me that if I would have went home and went to sleep I would have died. I weighed 385 pounds. That was my wake up call. As of now I weigh 249 pounds, but my goal weight is 180. Hopefully we'll be able to talk more. Nice meeting you, and we will all be able to help you if you need any help. The people here are so nice and supportive. I'm so glad I found this board.

Hi!

Welcome back, and I hope you get to stick around a while. ;)

I think the good news that you need to hear, and maybe your doctor did not tell you, is that if you lose just 5 to 7% of your body weight and exercise at least 30 minutes a day 5 days a week, you can prevent or delay the onset of type II diabetes.

(see link - http://www.ndep.nih.gov/diabetes/prev/prevention.htm)

Imagine how much lower your risk would be if you lost MORE than 5 to 7%, and actually worked your way all the way down to your goal weight! You can do it. Just commit and go!

Hello there!

The 5-7% thing is true. Once I lost about 5% of my body weight, I could really feel the difference physically and emotionally. I felt so good after that first step that I knew I had to go on. I have now lost a little over 10% and am feeling fantastic. You just have to start and stick with it. Sometimes that seems impossible but the rewards are nothing short of beautiful.

Thank you for all the encouragement :) If I am doing this 5-7% calulation right, then I have to lose between 12-17 lbs, which I do not find difficult at all, its a good temp goal
