Is this diet okay?

My goal is to lose 25 pounds in 10 weeks and I have a few questions about how I am doing so... I'm 5'3", 183 pounds right now. I want to lose down to 158 because that was where I got to on my last diet a year ago. My overall goal weight is 130, but for now I just want 158.

My plan is to steadily walk around 3 miles a day, everyday, and eat a strict diet of no more that 1200 calories. I'll be eating anywhere from 600 to 1200 calories, depending on my appetite. My friend said to eat 800 calories for two days, then 1200, but I'm probably just gonna do 1200 a day. Also, I have a supplement called Xenadrine Ultra I will also be taking.

Any tips or helpful comments?

I'm no expert, but I've done a bit of reading on this kind of stuff and I can synthesise the information I've come across on this board (and other sources that seem to be reputable).

* For most people, a safe weight loss is 1-2 pounds a week. (That's optimum- there are ups and downs on any diet, and even periods where the weight just doesn't shift) 2.5 pounds a week is probably not realistic, at least not healthily. You may need to think about this over a longer time period.
* Although there's some disagreement about this, a lot of what I've read has said that it's never safe to aim to eat below 1200 calories, and for most people, even that's not optimal. If you're going to calorie count, you need to work out what your maintenance level is and reduce from there (I used this website to work out mine: and reduced by 500 calories; other people have different approaches, such as 14-16 calories per pound is your maintenance, then take off 25%) You're not going to get the best out of that walk or feel very well if you restrict your diet so far.
* Calories aren't enough. What kind of things do you plan to eat? (You need a nutritious balanced diet no matter what)
* I know nothing about supplements, but I gather most people here don't believe in them.

If I were you, I'd work out your maintenance calorie allowance, reduce as appropriate, and work out nutritious ways to keep yourself satisfied (you won't keep on the diet if you're hungry/ feel sick all the time), and see how you go (asking for advice and/ or reducing your calories gradually- never below 1200- if you find you're not losing weight). Look to some of the weight loss diaries to see how other people are managing their weight loss for more ideas (and meal ideas/ recipes).

Don't eat any less than 1200. The friend who told you to eat 800 a day is insane! Not good for your body at all. Eating between 600-1200 a day is going to damage your health.

Spot on advice from Amy there! She's right, dont go under 1200 cals, that can be harmful to your body. Eat less/ move more, theres no magic pill out there.

Amy said everything that I was going to say ^_^ Read her post again.
