Is this a good exercise routine?

6 days per week:

10 minutes elliptical
10 minutes twist board
10 minutes jump rope

Then i do 20 minutes of weight lifting. I'm doing 7 pounds.
Plus Im limiting my calories to 1500 max.

Should I do the weights every other day instead and increase my cardio on the days i don't do weights?

I know any exercise is better than no exercise but I would like some input on this exercise routine.

No idea what a twist board is.
Also, if you have bad knees or ankles, you'll want to be careful doing jump rope. Personally, I'd recommend jogging for the same amount of time, since it is lower impact than jumping rope, yet burns a lot of calories also. Maybe jump rope 5 min, jog 10?
elliptical is a fine workout.

I've been told by a trainer that my weights (I use 2 x 8kg dumbells - about 35 pounds) are very light and I am doing 'cardio' rather than weight work. So, I do both cardio (with resistance), core work and weights in the same session 4 - 5 times per week.

However, despite being told my weights are light I do find doing more than 2 consecutive days using the dumbells makes my shoulder hurt so if I want to do a third consecutive workout I generally ditched the weights and do the cardio with resistance and core work.

Another experienced trainer (he develops training programmes for the police force) told me to listen to my body and do what I can do without discomfort or excessive fatigue.

So, in theory you can do both cardio and weights 6 days a week but listen to your body - if you start to suffer from excessive fatigue or significant muscular discomfort then maybe alternate the days.

Monster: A twist board is this small circle object. You stand on it and twist left and right. It's supposed to workout your stomach, thighs, and backside.
As far as the jump rope, maybe your right. The front part of my leg (beneath my knee, not sure what it's called) has been hurting so much when i try to jump rope. So I'm going to have to find something else. Jogging is impossible for me these days. Snow and ice are all over the ground so I'm gonna have to wait for the snow to clear up.

Spinner: 35 pounds is too light?? Im doing only 7 pounds/hand and I can barely get through my workout! I don't think I could increase it even if I wanted to. Your advice seems very reasonable. Thanks for sharing.

You are very welcome!

And yes I find 35 pounds tough - I do about 150 moves with them! I was a tad put out when I was told they were light weights but like you I started with 7 pounds and have worked my way up. If you keep up your training you will no doubt work your way up as well!!!

Let me also suggest that you carefully decide what order you do your workout in. I think the elliptical will help cool down and stretch out your muscles after jumping rope, jogging, or what ever weight training you're doing.

that's funny (some of the reasoning)... I don't disagree with anything, it's just funny to see how different things work for different people.

Me, I am 29 years old, athletic (again), and I have 7 knee surgeries under my belt. I have 3 cadaver pieces, and several screws, etc. Now for me, jumping rope is what I was told to do because of the limited impact on the knee. Also, when I do run (about 6 miles/ day x 5 days/ week. I start with the eliptical, sometimes for 20 minutes in order to get the joints warmed up.

The part under the front of the knee that someone said was hurting sounds like a lower bursa sac inflamation. I get that sometimes too, and that is what my PT (physical therapist told me).

If you have any kind of injury/ pain at all, it's best to consult a professional, or pay for a single visit with a physical/ occupational therapist somewhere. There were some exercises that I thought would be cake, that I could not do at all. Others that my therapist said may cause pain, were cake. Bottom line, you need to do what you can in order to get the most effective workout, with the least pain.

Best of luck...

Monster: I always do elliptical first because I really push myself on it. I tried once to do my weights first and by the time that I got to my elliptical time I was exhausted and I couldn't push very much. Would just stretching before and after exercising suffice or do i have to change the order of my workout?

Melancholy: I think that pain I was getting was just soarness. The first 3 days I jumped rope, my calves were soar. Then on the 4th day when I started alternating legs to jump (rather than both legs together), that's when I started feeling that pain in the front part of my leg (but only when I jump rope - not while doing any other exercise or during the day). Thanks for the reply.
