IS the 4th a paid holiday?

I work for the town of where I live and everyone I work with punched in 8 hours for today and set it at 8-holiday. I am the only one my age so I didn't know wether I was suposed to enter those hours in or not? Is the 4th a paid holiday? What are the norms surrounding this holiday?

Depends upon the company you work for. Generally if you are not working you will not get paid. If you are on salary, it does not matter.

Union shops have a lot of goofy paid holiday stuff, but those are the only places I now of that do any type of paid holiday.

Cities will pay you for the 4th. Usually 8 Holiday hours (worth same as regular).
