Is Smith Machine Ok for Toning?

I want to start lifting regularly to get back in shape a bit. I have absolutely no desire to get as strong as possible, and I'm not trying to be a hardcore lifter. I'm basically just looking to improve my strength a bit, lose some weight, and get toned. I'm wondering if a smith machine would be adequate for this. I did a few searches and it seems a lot of people are negative toward them, but for this use would it be sufficient. I'm not really comfortable dealing with freeweights, so thats why I thought a Smith machine might be better. Thanks.
