Is it true that you shouldnt run the same day you lift?

I'm interested in the response to your question as well. As one of my hardest workouts is an hour of CV and then squats lunges deadlifts and leg press ohh sumu squats afterwards. A few people have also told me I should only do CV one day and weights the other?????? So replies to the question above please?????

Personally, I would never EVER perform cardio before weight training. I would never be able to get an intense weight training session in if I pre-exhausted myself with cardio.

If you choose to perform cardio on the same day as your weight training, I'd suggest you perform cardio in the AM and weight training in the PM OR cardio after your weight training session.

It depends on what your goals are. Unless you are a pure bodybuilder i would say that some cardio is grand in the same session. I wouldn't do a long LIT exercise generally a HIIT exercise.
Also as far as i am aware generally it is best to do the weights first. But i am with likkle on this my hardest and favorite day is the day i do 60 minute spin class followed by weights

Crap, so I have been doing it backwards, so lift first then run, that actually would be better for me time-wise because I like to run at night.

I'd like to add something- won't it hurt some of your regrowing muscles after the weightlifting if you run on the same day as lifting? I'm not so much talking about cardio, but trying to improve my long distance running.

I beleive training is all what you get use too. If you can run 3 miles and hit the weights then go for it. If not come up with something better. I like hitting the weights then go for a run. To each there own.

The first question if you do both on the same day is there a more likely risk of you getting injured running first or lifting first? Second question is does running hurt the growth process of developing muscle? HIIT or more aerobic running. Please answer as I'm really interested to find out this information.

If you do a full body workout before you run, there is no way you'll have the power to run a decent workout. Like it was earlier suggested, the best thing to do would be run in the morning, give yourself plenty of time to replenish, and lift in the afternoon. Never heard anything bad about running on the same day as lifting, my track coach (who was an ex-olympic athlete) recommended that I run at least five days a week and lift 3 days.

I always wonder about this question to to myself.

Q and A

the person at the site says muscles will still grow the same even if performed on same session

another Q and A

read answer 2. in the answer portion. This is what it says...
2. Yes, it is Okay to do cardio a day after doing lower body exercises, because they do not coincide. This is because cardio exercises do not affect a specific muscle group, they just burn fat. It is, in turn, okay to do cardio exercises the same day or the day after working lower body muscle groups.
____________

so this means it is okay to do cardio on the same day as weightraining, but not the same day as working lower body muscle groups. Cardio is fine being done on the same day as upper body workout.

Because I do that but I run first before lifting?

Hiya,

my opinion is that it is fine, and particularly good if you do the CV immediately before your weights.
I'm all for a good warm up before a hardcore resistance workout as this pretty much negates injury. If you consider muscles to be like chewing gum (to use a crap analogy). Cold chewing gum snaps, warm chewing gum is more pliable.

I realise many bodybuilders prefer a light warm up set before hand but this has been proven to be less effective IIRC. THe resoning is apparently that wasting calories on CV means there are less to go towards their muscle building.

In the other scenario where you do your CV some time before or after your resistance (on the same day), I still don't see a problem. As long as you give the muscles enough time to recover then you'll be cool.

Of course, I put aside the possibility of over-training, injury and available energy.

i think the main concern that ive heard is that if u run before you workout then you will be tired and not able to reach maximum intensity. i think thats why most split it to different days or atleast lots of time in between.

I don't think lower body weightraining is really even needed (power clean is good because its full body); therefore, it should be okay to include cardio, abdominal work, and weightraining on the same day. weightraining is mostly about the upper body and cardio is the lower body. upper body first and cardio last is the best way to do it.

that is absolute nonsense. why would you aim for a defined, built up top half and just forget gaining any strength or definition on the bottom half?

weight training and cardio exercise should both be well balanced across the body, or else your asking for all kind of muscular inbalances and problems in later life.

Personally I do some cv work before doing weights to warm up my muscles then have a good stretch before doing resistance and then go for a swim after the weight training. How long should the warm up last before doing some weights?
