Is Fasting the key to weight loss?

I have been reading a bit about Fasting. What is your opinion?
Nope,... fasting will slow down your metabolism.
A one day fast isn't going to hurt anything, but it's just like dropping below your caloric needs, your body will go into starvation mode, and refuse to lose any fat at all.
In general, I don't think it's a really good idea.
also.... you might want to do a search here, it's been discussed quite bit.
Good Luck!

I started fasting recently and it totally helped me break through my weight loss plateaus, so much so I started extending them to where I'm now going to do a longer one, up to 30 days or when I hit my goal. A lot of research supports short term fasts as BENEFICIAL which supported my anecdotal evidence I was compiling myself. Not sure about longer term fasts but we'll see. One thing is for sure, the only proven weight loss method is calorie restriction. And fasting does that in spades. I also exercise while fasted, which is sorta how I stumbled onto the idea in the first place. Just check your keytones after a long bike ride or run after going 15 hours without food vs. that same workout that you ate something right before. I turn it purple with keytones when I do it fasted but nada when I've eaten something. That got me thinking. And now the fast is melting off me faster than ever before, and I was making decent progress doing the same old six meals a day of clean eating bla bla bla stuff. I still eat clean but simply hit a protein target and a calorie target (higher than my maintenance since I'm fasting in between). It may not be for everyone but I find it superior to anything else so far.

I have to agree with razerfish. I actually did a post on this a while back. The problems that I had before I fasted was severe pain in my joints. I went about 18 hours without eating anything...don't worry because I did drink plenty of water to keep myself hydrated.

After the fast I just felt so much better! My energy levels were much higher and guess what happen to my joint pain...it was gone. This is something that in my opinion would be very beneficial for me if I do this at least 2 days per week. It's been about 2 weeks since I started doing this, but I noticed that my eating habits has also changed for the better.

I just don't have the desire to eat as much as I used too. I wouldn't recommend this to everyone, but it's worth a try if you want to get over the hump or you want to see results quicker. This may not work for everyone due to the simple fact that you may feel the urge to overeat if you are not careful. This is where you can get in to a lot of trouble if you are not careful.

One thing that I can ay is that you body does need to cleanse itself from time to time. Their is only on way to find out?

It already does. Unless you have an actual medical condition, the human body handles your toxins and waste disposal just fine. The idea of 'cleansing' is advertising mumbo-jumbo.

Hi Jericho,

If you go for a colostomy you would have to fast and cleanse because your body doesn't empty out completely by its self. Maybe if you have a diarrhea and too sick to eat, your body may be cleansed that way. My DH when he eats out at a restaurant he can't hardly make it to the BR in time after he eats, but I used to be the obsolete. My DH weights around 270 to 300.

To me fasting and cleansing to lose weight is the wrong way to lose weight and stay healthy. I believe most of the cleanses that are advertised are scams to make money! But if one is staying constipated and feeling bad all the time. What is wrong with going to your local herb/vitamin store and see what they recommend? If you go to your doctor with the problem, he would just put you on Philip's laxatives or another laxative the rest of your life. So what would be wrong with trying a full body cleanse from time to time from the GNC store?:seeya:

The medical community as a whole has stated that cleansing and detox is a hoax. The idea there is massive amounts of waste in the colon just sitting there is again debunked. You show me a medical study that says it that isn't payed for by a detox program.

You know WHY you fast before a Colonoscopy? It's so that there isn't food you are still digesting in the track. It's not because your system can't do it.

Sorry, but the medical research when it comes to the idea of cleansing because your body can't do it right is a joke.

It helped because you reduced the number of calories you had during the day. We tend to snack (and snack badly) later in the day.

Foods are not always broke down properly in our digestive system, when this happens food doesn't get fully digested. I am not sure, but I think that the digestive system only breaks down about half the food we eat. People with autoimmune disease their digestive system doesn't work properly! You know people do get constipated sometimes and use laxatives and enemas!! Why? But who am I to talk I only made C's in health class:toetap05: hmmm but I worked as a CNA most of my working days:D Buddy, some people need a little help sometimes, moving their poo, lol. Sorry, but I have been bathing the elderly many a time and they can't do the poo thing til the water hits their behind and it usually landed on me:smilielol5:

THAT isn't cleansing though. Maybe we are discussing two different things. Constipation is different than cleansing. You know what happens to food not broken down fully? That is what comes out when you go to the bathroom.

Look, do the medical research. The idea of cleansing for weight loss has been disproved over and over again.

Constipation is usually caused by a disorder of bowel function rather than a structural problem. Common causes of constipation include:

Inadequate water intake.

Inadequate fiber in the diet.

A disruption of regular diet or routine; traveling.

Inadequate activity or exercise or immobility.

Eating large amounts of dairy products.

Stress.

Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement, which is sometimes the result of pain from hemorrhoids.

Overuse of laxatives (stool softeners) which, over time, weaken the bowel muscles.

Hypothyroidism.

Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis.

Antacid medicines containing calcium or aluminum.

Medicines (especially strong pain medicines, such as narcotics, antidepressants, or iron pills).

Depression.

Eating disorders.

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Pregnancy.

Colon cancer.

In some cases, lack of good nerve and muscle function in the bowel may also be a cause of constipation.

That's not weight loss, that is medical. There is a difference. The idea we need to take things to clean ourselves is an advertising/diet industry buzz claim. Before you start claiming about detox (cleansing) being healthy or for weight loss, post links to medical studies or actual reports that backs the claim.

The thread is about fasting, but we got on the subject of cleansing..:argue:
Any time you have to take a laxative or use an enema you are cleansing. (I told you before I am not for cleansing to lose weight.) I agree it is not healthy to fast or use any kind of cleanse to lose weight. But yes I believe it is healthy to cleanse some times. Far as medical; doctors would rather you use laxatives or enemas for cleansing, they will not recommend a full body cleanse. :p Its:cool:

Fasting has proved to be a great kickstart to weightloss for me when I need it. Remember humans never had a constant supply of high calorie food not so long ago. Our bodies are designed to store fat and burn it via ketosis when we are without food.

As for cleansing I will go with my own experience, it works wonders. I don't use commercial cleanse products. I use magnesium oxide and it is amazing. Take it once per day for a week and every second day for the next week and you will see the rotting compacted rubbish that is removed from your colon. I aim for a digestive tract transit time of 24 hours meaning whatever I eat I want digested or expelled within 24 hours. When you achieve this you feel better and have much healthier skin.

So you are taking an antacid/laxitive daily for a week? Wow..that's awful! Why would you put your body through such a thing? You sound exactly like the commericals for detox (which is medically disproven)

You are actually forcing your body to digest faster than it should. This can cause malnutrition and other health problems.

Your response is incorrect.

I am not forcing my body to digest faster than it should. I am clearing out rubbish from inside my body twice per year. After that my digestive system works better. I am not forcing it to do anything.

thanks for another link ;)

So Jericho - given all of these online studies you read you must be an expert on good health. How is your health at the moment?

Sorry to burst your bubbles guys but Jericho is right on this one. The body 'cleanses' itself everyday just fine. If you lost weight during your cleanse it's because of a calorie deficit not because your body was 'ridding itself of toxins'. If your body couldn't handle that job then people who didn't cleanse regularly would be in significant trouble.

There are no scientific support to show that cleansing helps your body more than just eating healthy.

I'm not telling you whether you should cleanse or not, but don't claim it's reducing toxins in your body and making you healthier, because it's not. If you feel better after a cleanse it's probably because of the increased amount of water you were drinking while on the cleanse.

Fasting is a very sketchy idea to me. It seems like your body would go into starvation mode and it would be very hard not gain back the lost weight after the fast. But if you've had success with it, go for it.

First of all, I'm not sure if you've done your research on laxatives, but they do increase the rate at which you digest food.

Laxatives (purgatives, aperients) are foods, compounds, or drugs taken to induce bowel movements or to loosen the stool, most often taken to treat constipation. Certain stimulant, lubricant, and saline laxatives are used to evacuate the colon for rectal and/or bowel examinations, and may be supplemented by enemas under certain circumstances. Sufficiently high doses of laxatives cause diarrhea. Laxatives work to increase the movement of fecal matter along the colon.[1]

Grow up, this is a discussion. Don't make it personal.
