Sport Is 1 meal a day unhealthy?

Sport Fitness
I recently fell into a moderate 'depression' I guess you could call it.. and I completely lost my appetite for anything.. I wasnt even thirsty anymore. I had to REMEMBER to drink (water) and although my brain knew I was hungry the thought of eating anything made me feel sick. I literally had no appetite. But since I have been exercising to lose weight I made myself eat atleast something each day.. sandwich and salad.. banana and sandwich.. but it was only like once a day..

I am not so 'depressed' anymore, but my appetite has yet to return.. I know it goes into calories and all that, but is eating once a day no-brainer unhealthy, or will it be okay as long as I am eating SOMETHING untill my appetite comes back?

thanks guys.

If eating once a day is still a banana and a sandwich, then yes, that is very unhealthy because you're in an extreme deficit and will be very deficient in a lot of things. If you're getting a variety of foods and enough calories eating once a day, though that is highly unlikely, then it's totally fine.

thanks for the feedback everyone.

I ended up getting my appetite back! but now I feeel like I could let myself eat all day haha.

thanks again guys

I would of thought 1 meal a day is unhealthy no matter the situation but i have no evidence, it's just what i assume.

Why is 1 meal a day not unhealthy Ride On?

it depends on what you mean by 'unhealthy' really.

if you can get all your required calories, and micronutrients in one meal, then the body can at least keep functioning normally. thus, 'healthy'

however it'd TOTALLY screw up your insulin and blood sugar levels, not to mention metabolism. thus 'unhealthy'

Not necessarily. Can you back that up?

And BigT, look up intermittent fasting. There is nothing unhealthy about eating lots of calories and one time and not eating during the other parts of the day. In fact, it can be beneficial to insulin levels and metabolism. Metabolism actually increases, albeit very minimally (2-5% I think), in a fast lasting less than 36 hours.

An interesting thought, on the basis that limiting insulin release to less frequent bursts could help maintain or improve insulin sensitivity then that's possible. There must have been research on that

Not sure about the supply of nutrient though, would your body be able to store everything you required for 24 hours from 1 meal? I would have thought it'd need to extract nutrients from your body after a while. Also, could you physically manage to eat enough in one meal to sustain you for a day?

I thought this too, that you would naturally HAVE to excrete some nutrients because of the overload at once and no release at other times. However, if you think back to times that our ancestors didn't know if they'd get a meal in a day, my guess it he body adapts a way to do it correctly. As for eating enough in one meal for the day, yeah, most people would probably hate that for sure haha

I recently read an article on builtlean.com about this same topic. It stated that sumo wrestlers eat only one or two times a day and that is how they maintain their weight. I used to only eat a few times a day but now I have spread it to about 5 times a day. My energy levels are much higher than they have ever been and I am at a much healtheir weight than I was. The less often that you eat, the more that your metabolism slows and we don't want that. I hope this helps and the blog builtlean.com is really worht checking out. Good luck with everything!
