Interval training instead of leg workout?

A buddy of mine told me yesterday that he's not doing leg exercises anymore. The reason is that he does interval training on a treadmill 4-5 times a week after his upper body and core workouts (about 20 minutes, 1 minute at sprinting speed & 1 minute at walking speed over and over). He says that interval training that much is the same as lifting weights for your legs.

I told him that it's not the same and he should have at least one leg day where he does a few sets of squats and lunges or something.

Who's right?

you are.
even with HIIT at full blast, cant replace heavy squats for producing power/ body strength.

You are right. HIIT helps to preserve muscle mass better than steady state or lower intensity cardio, but it doesn't build strength or muscle mass like resistance training does.

Yep, HIIT, great as it is, simply cannot replicate the load bearing exercises like squats, lunges and deadlifts.

And those exercises also help us maintain bone density as we get older.
