Interesting Observation about Alcohol and Weight Loss

Hey everyone,

Just an interesting observation. I have noticed that whenever I drank alcohol (which is not often), I always have weight loss next day (.5 pound off)... I know it's not a lot, but always "guaranteed".

My guess is that alcohol dehyrdates the water in the body, causing a slight weight loss next day.

Sometimes, when I work out heavy (cardio, etc)... takes some time to see even .5 lb weight loss, but with alcohol, wham! next day 0.5lb weight loss.

Alcohol is not key to weight loss obviously so just don't do it often! :) Just an interesting observation... Anyone else has noticed this as well?

Mike

Well it's a fact, it's a diuretic. It's also an appetite stimulant.

I've noticed this as well, but there are alot of studies saying you should not consume alcohol if you ever want to burn fat.

The reasons argued for this is because alcohol is a poison and takes priority for the liver to oxodize it. Basically, when you drink, your body says STOP BURNING FAT, WE HAVE POISON TO GET RID OF.

I wonder what those studies would say to my losing 70+ pounds of fat but still managed to have a few drinks over the weekend?

I have noticed it for myself, but I find it very upsetting. I find I don't eat much or at all if I am drinking and the next day I just pick at food or drink fluids.

It could depend on what you are drinking too, not sure.

I would rather be building muscle and losing weight the healthy way than being upset by weightloss caused by drinking the night before.

I never noticed whether I gained or lost weight the next day from drinking alcohol.

One thing that losing weight has affected for me is my tolerance. I can't drink as much as I used to without seriously detrimental results. That's fine, going through less booze costs less. And not so many calories.

Just keep yourself hydrated (with water!) when you drink alcohol. That will help flush out the toxins too.

I do experience this as well when i drink.. i also notice that it makes me pee very frequently and when i do it very clear, you cant even tell that i just peed at least a cup or 2. why? probably because i'm not flushing anything just losing hydration... or maybe it's just because vodka is clear :biggrinjester: I also find that i wake with very dry mouth and very thirsty to where ill down a bottle and a half of water just to feel better

Alcohol definitely dehydrates the body. So, yes, I would imagine that is the main reason why you experience a temporary weight loss. In the long run, though, remember that alcohol has 7 calories per gram, which is lower than fat, but more than carbohydrate or protein. Of course, if your drink is only 5% alcohol, then the rest may be water, carbohydrate, etc. It really depends on the drink. However, the more alcohol (or higher %) the more calories and the more dehydrated you will probably be.

Interestingly, as I've gradually been losing weight, I've noticed that if my weight stops going down, if I vamp up my amount of protein/fat by a bit (cheeseburger!) then my weight starts going down again. Of course, I am lowering the rest of my day's calories to make up for the cheeseburger. But, my body also seems to appreciate the occasional splurge. I am gradually getting better at managing my fat/protein/carbohydrate ratios, though, and when I get them right I imagine my weight will go down without needing an occasional splurge (not to mention I don't get cravings nearly as often as when I am eating too carbohydrate heavy).
