India!

So, just bought some tickets to India for September! Will be out there for 2 weeks with the folks and girlfriend. Haven't been back there in over a decade!
Will be going to Mumbai (Bombay), Ahmedabad, and Chennai (Calcutta). Stoked!

India, huh. Are you from there? Interesting choice for a vacation.

Hehe, yes, I'm from there. Lived there until I was 12. :)

Also, have like a 12 hour layover in London, so that should be cool. ;)

Yeah, my folks came from a lot of $, so we'll be staying in some chic neighborhoods with some family. There are parts of Bombay that boast some of the highest real estate prices in the world. :) Chennai is more of a tropical destination, and Ahmedabad is where I was born and lived.

It's easy to see the separation though. You'll see like upper/upper-middle class neighborhoods for a mile, and then a major road, and then some slums, and repeat.

You guys should do a search for KERALA on google images. It's like Hawaii. :)

Yea, I'm sure that India has some beautiful locations. I just don't like the fact there is no middle class. Your either rich or poor...

Yep... tough to get rid of 2,500 years of the caste system. It's slowly getting better, though. But, you get 1 billion+ people in an area roughly 1/3rd the size of the US... it's bound to happen.

I don't know jack about India, but my wife's American niece lives in the Czech Republic and goes there at least once a year. She took a 2-week camel ride across the desert. Weird (to me)

Nice... my girflriend actually spent 6 weeks studying abroad in Prague, at St. John's university. She loved it! Apparently heavy drinkers, those Czech peoples. :)

I was just in India about 2 months ago for work... I was in Bangalore for a week and then in Calcutta (we were often mistaken for T20 Cricketers while in Calcutta!). There's a restaurant in Calcutta called "Peshawri" which has EXCELLENT authentic indian food, definitely worth a stop. Honestly though, i enjoyed Bangalore more than Calcutta, so I don't have much else to offer!

I really enjoyed the trip, it was a really great experience. I'm lucky enough that I get to go again next year!

Nice... I won't be anywhere close to Calcutta, but I will be somewhat by Bangalore (Chennai is pretty close). That's awesome that you got a chance to visit!

Oh, I misunderstood your first post where you mentioned Calcutta. If you get into the city of Bangalore, you can get bespoke shirts and suits for really cheap. Check out P.N. Rao... nice stuff!

My bad, I totally spaced that I put Calcutta. Chennai used to be called Madras, not Calcutta. It's been a decade; sorry! :)

Yes, that's what I was wondering when you first wrote "Chennai (Calcutta)". (And isn't Calcutta now spelled (in English) Kolkata, and Bangalore now spelled Bengaluru?)

Correcto... a big proverbial middle finger to the British influence. :)
