Hi everyone,
I was wondering if someone here would be able to help me. My problem concerns the apparent trade-off between stamina and speed. I am hoping to restart playing amateur level soccer (I am a 25-yo male) early next year, so I need to be able to sprint, but I also need to recover quickly and keep going for 90+ minutes. I feel that I could do with improving my stamina base, but I don't want to become a "plodder". If I include also include sprints, can I throw in a couple of 3-5 mile runs to my training without ending up with too many slow-twitch fibres? Here's what I'm thinking:
Mon: Sprints
Tue: Long steady run
Wed: Weights
Thu: Sprints
Fri: Long steady run
Sat: Weights
Sun: Rest
I have used intervals, and while I showed improvement at the distances used (approx 400-800m), I'm not sure if they address my ability to cope with high volumes of work. Also, I seem to pick up cold etc easily when using these. As a rough guide to my running level I take 10-10:30 for an approx 1.5 mile run. 3 miles takes 22-23 min. Harder to measure sprint times alone, but I'm confident that I won't be the slowest there if I maintain my current speed.
Should also mention that I have access to an exercise bike.
Hope someone can help, if you need to know anything more just ask.
Thanks
B
