Sport Increasing number of meals...

Sport Fitness
Hi guys,

Tried looking for some info on this and I can't really find what I'm looking for.

How many of you have increased the number of meals you eat? 4, 5 or 6?

I currently eat 3 times a day (8am, 12:30pm and 7:30pm) and I'm struggling to see how I could eat more often without it being a real pain in the ass. How do you guys do it and what do you eat?

Would it make that much difference?

I'm exercising about 5 times a week at the moment, running outside, various cardio in the gym and then 4-5 sets of weights.

I eat 6 times a day.

Meal 1:7.30am 30 min after I wake up

Meal 2:10.30am wholemeal pitta wrap I prepared in the morning and took to work with me (I sometimes buy a sandwich that has enough protein and throw away some bread that's in excess of my carb intake)

Workout

Meal 3: 13.00 Lunch, post-workout nutrition

Meal 4: 16.00 Carb+ Protein

Meal 5: 19.00 I'm already home so have a salad with some protein

Meal 6: 21.30 Another protein+fiberous carb combo

Not that difficult, just give it a try. After you start doing it your body clock gets used to it and let's you know when it's time to eat next time.

I work 9am-6pm.

I get up around 8am. eat my eggs right when i get to work.

then around 11am I'll have another meal.

get home about 1:15pm for lunch.

eat again about 3:45-4pm.

workout at 7-8pm
PWO shake when i get home...8ish

last meal at 10pm. in bed before 11pm.

6 meals.

That's crazy!

I can't imagine I would be able to do that. I've got myself in a nice little routine where I grab a sandwich with my colleagues at lunch and then I cook dinner with the missus in the evening. I'd want it to have as little impact on my routine as possible.

Perhaps I could just take it up to 4 initially? Maybe get a big sandwich at lunch, and eat half then and then the other half around 3pm?

But then I HAVE also started having a snack in the evening, so I guess without much effort I'd be up to 5 meals a day...

that'll work to start...but you're going to hinder your results by only eating 4 times a day.

here's the analogy I always use: the body is really just an organic machine. food is fuel. but we're not really like a normal combustion engine...we're much more like a steam engine. and how do you keep a steam engine running strong and fast? by constantly tossing 2-3 logs on the fire every 20 miles. if you throw 10 logs on the fire smothers itself out. if you throw a half a log on...the fire cools off, and the train slows down.

10,000 years ago, most humans were still hunter gatherer tribes. you ate when there was food, and that might be 3 times a day, or 7. just depended on what berries could be found and what animal the men could kill. we've not really evolved beyond that. the only reason we have '3 square meals a day' is because society deemed it appropriate for the working class to act in this manner.

I never feel tired during the day, because my blood sugar never spikes and dips like most people's do after a heavy noon lunch.

Since you're having a snack already just turn it into your meal n5. Anyway, it's beyond my comprehension how anyone can go from breakfast to lunch without starving. I'd be absolutely ravenous by 11.30 but then again if you eat full english breakfast every day...

I don't feel tired until I go to bed, and I don't feel hungry until I eat (if that makes sense) so I don't see that there's a problem.

But since I'm trying to lose bodyfat I've been told that by spreading out your meals you essentially increase your motabolism, which can't be bad.

I'll try that :)

What would you recommend to eat just before you go to bed? I've always been told eating just before bed isn't a good idea...

For breakfast I usually have a generous bowl of cereal

Its strange but I DO get hungry around 11am, and by 12:00 I'm always itching to go and get a sandwhich...

What you have to do is to eat 5 small meals a day, so your lunch, breakfast and dinner portions you're consuming now will have to shrink to allow these extra meals.

This forum has tons of info on how to calculate the correct calorific and nutritional intake based on your stats, have a look around.

Before bed many people like to have cottage cheese (I would if I could take lactose). Have it with some salad.

Thanks, I'll have a good think about it :)
