Inches vs. weight???

Well, I am still stuck on a plateau as I've said before, at 210lbs.

Here bout 2-3 weeks ago I went to the clothing store and tried on some size 36 jeans, and they fit perfectly, I also tried on some 34's and they were too tight. Today I went to the same store, and tried on the same jeans, and to my surprise discovered that size 34 fit me perfectly, and size 36 was now too big. So this pleasant discovery lead me to the following question:

How is it possible to lose INCHES, when the scale shows the same? Is this a fluke? Or is there an actual scientific explaination to why I haven't lost any weight, but I've slimmed my waist by a whole size.

Please explain

A topic near and dear to my heart

Morning,

This is a topic I adore, as I'm currently going thru it as well. It seems like my weight plateaus last and last and last (and then I'll drop 2, count them, 2 pounds) and last and last and ....

Meanwhile, my measurements most definitely change! Steve and Mal and Leigh etc can give a much more detailed answer, but the short response is, you could be losing fat, gaining muscle, retaining water, etc. Remember, the scale doesn't measure JUST fat - there be muscles and bones and water and tendons and ligaments and the food you ate yesterday in there too!

I refuse to acknowledge the scale anymore (well, okay, I'll say hello to it, but I don't angst over what it says). I go by my trusty tape measure instead.

Hope that helps,

Barbara

Wow/ I 'm almost honored to be put in the same class as steve about being knowledgable... thanks... undeserved but thanks -he'll even tell you i'm an idiot...

there's a bit of a debate somewhere on this forum, about how muscle weighs more than fat does.. and while that's technically not true - 1lb = 1lb - always...

Picture 1lb of feathers... now picture 1lb of pennies... the feathers take up much more volume than the pennies do - they're the same weight - but the density is far different...

If you've been working out, then it's possible for your muscle mass to have increased -tightening up your 'density' and while the scale hasn't changed -your measurements have.

For the past year or so I've been keeping track of measurements -and except for the past 3 months, I've seen dramatic changes there - and that to me is more important than the scale...

Scales suck.

I remember I lost 1.5 inches from my waist and felt thinner all over pretty much

But according to the scales I'd gained a pound.

I remember that happening too. I am currently in a 34 jean and trying to get down into a 32. I hate the scale, so I don't usually like to weigh myself. Going by inches and how your clothes fit is a much better way (I think) to monitor your body. I would probably cry if I had to weigh myself everyday, lol.

Congrats on your decrease in pants size. I'm right there with ya buddy :)

It's related to composition changes. Especially when you first start a training program, you can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. Muscle chews up calories helping you to lose fat and also weighs more. This is probably what happened.
