Improving appearance of abdominal muscles

Hi

I have been back down the gym weight lifting since I broke my arm playing sport for the last 3 months. I have been doing mainly upper body work in the view of bulking up. I am pretty muscular now and pleased with the results, I have noticeable abs, but I want to improve these. I am fairly slender anyway but I think I need to do some cardio work to get rid of a little bit (a very small amount) of fat I have around my stomach to improve the appearance of my abs.

I am generally in the gym 3 times a week and train very hard lifting weights for the maximum time possible i.e. 70 minutes and I am giving my body/muscles plenty of time to recover. I also do 30 minutes of ab work such as crunches and leg lifts (using ab slings) before I even get to the gym.

I used to be a professional athlete so I have a lot of energy and have started to run after my weight lifting for roughly 25-30 minutes (3/4miles). This is the schedule that suits me best. I know that the best way to lose this weight is to probably run on a separate day to the day I lift weights but this isn't really practical for me.

I know the running (cardio) will help me lose any excess fat but will it have a detrimental affect on my muscles building back after doing weight work? I still want to bulk up more but just lose a bit of fat around my stomach.

Like I said it isn't much fat at all I need to lose and I would rather bulk up than slim down or hinder muscle growth by running.

Thanks in advance for you replies.;)

for an ex-pro athlete i'd pick one or the other...You can't bulk and cut at the same time. So if you're priority is to get the abdominal definition, you must eat 2-300 calories a day less than you burn. After you attain your goal, you can go for bulking, eating the same/more calories than you burn in a day. But both will not happen simultaneously unless you have not been working out for a long time.
