I'm watching a show on TLC...

So what are you saying? Are you turned on to powerlifting yet?

LOL

well...there is a reason for him being 700 lbs... lol talk about some heart problems he's gonna have and other problems... gosh! that's crazy...makes me wanna go and lift right now!

There was a thing on breakfast TV this morning about a 42 stone woman which is about 550 lbs!! She hasn't left the house in years apparently. Felt really sorry for her actually - no idea what her calorie consumption was though but, I would guess pretty damn high!

Felt really sorry for her actually -

I have no pity for those that do that to them selfs, If you have a medical condition that can lead to being so overweight thats one thing. But to eat until your skin is busting at the seems is pathetic and the blame can be placed no where but on them selfs.

I agree, get some self control.

I have no idea what caused her to reach that size but, I cannot believe that there isn't some underlying issue whether its physiological or psychological. It isn't as black & white as 'they have no self control'

Fact is, she had reached a point where excercise isn't physically possible, she can't be in a happy place mentally if she can't even go to the toilet unassisted. So, whether she eats a lot or not, I felt sorry for her - she must hate her life.

Saying your to fat to exercise is about like saying your too skinny to eat. I do not care how overweight you are, you can still do something to atleast begin the Weight loss process.

I'd agree with ChrisJG - it's more than likely a more complex situation than at first it seems. While exercise might not be an option, cutting down the caloric intake certainly would be (provided there wasn't an addictive dependency on it). I'd would just wonder who keeps bringing in the food.

But Christ, it's not like the people can't roll around or wave their arms or something to get some exercise. Have a custom wide-load wheel chair made for you so you can cart your own ass around for a while or something. There is NO excuse for being so utterly lazy...

There is no such thing as being "physically unable" to exercise unless you are a quadrapolegic (sorry bout the horrible spelling) or you are just a head in a glass jar....or well...dead in general.

Even if your body is "addicted" to eating, then whoever is feeding you should just feed you better foods or meal replacement stuff. It's not like they are going to get out of bed and chase you. After all, they are "physically unable" to exercise...and getting out of bed is exercise to them.

We have the Special Olympics. The people who take part in those should go and beat down these 500 lb people just for saying they are "physically unable" to work out.

There it is again - the assumption that the root cause must be laziness. "Oh look, he/she is fat, they must be to blame. " its very easy to be judgmental when its someone else in that position. I remember seeing some documentary about some guy in his twenties who was always hungry. I don't mean just fancied something to eat, I mean constantly famished, felt like he hadn't eaten for days, no matter how much he ate he was never satisfied. Its a recognised psychological problem and he was morbidly obese. Was he lazy too?

Sure, these people can excercise, do leg raises or whatever and it may make some small morsel of difference, that isn't what I meant. I very much doubt they ever wanted to be that way or even imagined they would be. If they had their time again, perhaps they wouldn't be but, hindsight is always crystal clear. I still feel sorry for them and the position they have found themselves in, whether they are to blame or not. It must be horrible.

Their is little point in discussing faults of others, it does nothing for our own goals. Rather their problem be physical or mental it does not matter, that is the situation they were either forced in by uncontrollable circumstances or choose for them selfs. And nothing we can say can change this, We can only make do with what we have. It is their choice what they do now with them selfs.

People who don't know how to keep themselves healthy ought to have the decency to get themselves buried, and not waste time about it.

you dont get that big without there being some condition, be it physical or mental. mental stuff like overheating is nothing to joke around with. I feel sorry for anyone whos in that situation.

With fast food and portion sizes today, 14K calories probably doesn't equate to as huge a pile of food as it sounds. I think you could so easily blow a few thousand calories on one fast-food meal that's just going to make you hungry again an hour or so later. So in that context, 14,000 probably isn't as bad as it sounds. I'm not at all condoning it--just thinking that it's not a tent full of rich food that's going to really fill you up.

When I travel outside of the U.S. is when I'm most reminded of how huge U.S. serving sizes are, how we're encouraged to eat more (how it's actually cheaper to eat more foods and foods that are unhealthy), how much we rely on take-out/fast food v. home-cooked meals, and how addicted to soda we are.

There is no way of knowing what another person feels, so blaming it on pure laziness is borderline cruel.

We no longer look at drug addicts, alcoholics, bulimics or anorexics like that, so why the morbidly obese? They are all the end result of purposely making very destructive choices, yet they are called "diseases", while being morbidly obese is still considered just being lazy. Talk about double standards.

For the record, I think they should start with lots of specialized therapy. Followed by a gradual reduction in calories and a gradual increase in activity. People like that literally cannot support their own weight, so most movement is not possible, but a slow and gradual process could help bring them out of it (depending on medical circs of course).

In whatever condition they are in, they should make an effort in some way, shape or form. It is ridiculous and I can't share any sympathy for them if they complain yet never even try.

On the show it said that he thought that he was eating around 2.500 calories, but as he thought about it, the number skyrocketed and he didn't even know he was close to 14,000. It said something like he ate 10 small cakes a day, among an insane amount of food that I can't even begin to imagine to explain.

This is so great. Thanks for posting that.

I have never known morbidly obese people, but I have known some depressed people and in the height of their depression, it took major effort to get up out of bed each day. Sometimes they didn't make it and their days just rolled together. I can imagine that depression often leads to weight problems for so many reasons. The combination of the two problems--obesity and depression--must be awfully debilitating and seems like it would pave the way to a tough vicious circle. :(
