I'm stumped, can you help?

Hi all,

If I have calories at 1800, I'll lose about 2-3 lbs and then never lose again. Then, I'll take it to 1600 with the same result, then 1400, 1200, 1000. This is while exercising consistently (30 day shred 3x a day - I do each level). The only time I lose consistently is around 800, which is too low to be healthy or livable.

I don't understand how I can exercise so much and have calories so low and not lose. I am positive about my calories. I weight everything and track it immediately.

I can eat about 2100 and stay the same weight and that is without exercise. So, at any of those calorie intakes above, I should be losing. What gives??

I'd like to lose 2lbs a week.

Could you tell us your height, weight and age? It can help make sure some of the numbers are right.

And welcome to the forum!

Its good to vary your calorie intake too - for example for me to have a decent calorie deficit I should have 1600 per day which is 11200 per week, so i eat 5 days at 1400 and 2 days at 2100 - just keeps your body "thinking" so it's not expecting the same calorie intake every day.

Thanks!

Edinburgh1975, does the varying help you not to plateau? Do you pretty consistently lose 3# a week?

You'll eat that way for a week? a month? a year?

Though everyone will lose weight while eating at a calorie deficit, some people will lose consistently bit by bit, and sometimes you seem to retain a bit more before a big "whoosh" of weight loss.

More info is needed to give you better answers though.

I question your results. Are you trying the different calorie levels for a long enough time to get meaningful results? If you eat at one calorie level for a week or two, then try something different, that's not long enough to tell anything.

Yeah was around 2-3lb per week when I started but around 1-2lb per week now - Lost 41lb since Jan 10 so seems to be working for me at least. I had a great reply from a guy on here a while back, ill see if I can find it for ya, he explains stuff like this better than I ever could.

A pound of weight is equal to 3,500 calories. If you wish to lose 2 pounds a week you will need to shed 500 calories a day from the amount of calories need to maintain your weight and burn 500 calories via exercise (or if you cut out exercise entirely you will need to drop the caloric intake by 1,000 instead). Our bodies can adjust to some pretty extreme regimens, though. You might have hit a plateau, in which case you'll need to switch some things up to shock your body out of it's funk.

I suggest switching your daily calories to 1,600 and working off 500 calories a day (try a different form of exercise then what you've been doing). Give that a try for a week or two and see if it bumps you out of your plateau. :)

Where you are getting your calories from is more important than the total calories.

What types of food are you eating?

Not exactly. If you are aiming for weight loss, it's a balance. You need to eat less calories but still get the nutrients you need.
