I'm starting to run. A few Qs.

That's right, I'm joining you; the few, the proud... the healthy.
I used to run a few years back (I consider this my 'prime' - in grade 10) and was able to run 12km in under an hour. I don't think I could do that now, but I want to be able to do that and more. I read an article that said that beginners should start out easy... but I went for a 'test run' a week ago and found that I'm still able to run comfortably at a quick pace (quick enough so that I can't talk while running). Should I continue to run at my quicker pace, or slow it down and start from the bottom again?

Also, I'm a very skinny guy - 6'1" and I weigh 135 pounds. I'm trying to pack on the pounds by hitting the weightroom three days a week, but I'm afraid that I'm just going to run off any extra weight that I gain. Any advice on this? I'm thinking of trying protein shakes to help with the weight gain.

Thanks.

Run at a pace that is comfortable for you. If that pace happens to be fast so be it. I don't really know the answer to the other part but I am sure someone else can help you with that.

If your goal is to gain muscle, and I would not be suprised if it is extremely important for you, why not ditch the cardio?

In a very very general sense, it is hard for many people to gain muscle while doing alot of cardio.

If aerobic fitness is also one of your goals then try HIIT which, from what I have read, may cause less muscle loss than slow, steady running at 80% HR.

Protein shakes may help somewhat, but your overall diet is much much much more important than the addition/subtraction of supplements. I subscribe to the school of thought in which to gain muscle you must be in a caloric surplus, i.e eating more calories than you are burning.

Since you want to bulk up you should keep the running to a minimum. Don't abandon it altogether, because cardio is important in overall fitness.

Intake alot of calories, calories are your friends when you want to add size. Eat a clean diet including Vitamins, proteins, fats, fiber, and carbohydrates.

Since you still have your running legs under you there is no need to start over at the bottom. If you can run a distance quickly, then go for it. Like i said earlier tho, keep it to just a couple times a week because you want to bulk.

Good luck and keep us posted

I plan to do HIIT first thing in the morning. Is it advisable to do it on an empty stomach? Whats the pre-workout nutrition that must be taken? Is a Banana good enough?

Eating the bannana first thing in the morning before a workout is good. Something small with carbs. Make sure you eat properly thru the rest of the day to keep your energy up.

You shouldn't workout on an empty stomache. You won't be as energenic.
