HI there,
My name is jenn and I just joined the forum today. I am following the glycemic index diet and i have had instant success with it. I lost 6 lbs the first week! I was shocked because I have a thyroid problem and i did not expect to lose so much even the first week. this seems like a great site and i am looking forward to meeting some new friends and losing weight!!! :D

Congratulations on choosing to lose weight! It's such a great feeling knowing you've made that decision. The GI diet seems to be doing well for you - hope it keeps up! What exactly is the GI diet like?

well, the glycemic index was developed by a canadian dr. named Rick Gallop. basically, every food has a glycemic index number. the higher the number, the faster it turns to sugar in your bloodstream. the lower the number the better. and the higher fiber content there is in a food, the lower the number is. I thought i was going to be miserable without my pizza and oreos but I am not! I adjusted pretty fast. I had to switch to whole wheat bread and pastas, but it is not a super strict diet. it is designed to be able to LIVE with it. in his book he says 90% commitment to the diet is fine. that leaves room for holidays and family gatherings where i don't have to worry about being 100% on a diet. I feel like i can go off a little sometimes and it's ok. i need that flexibility. plus, there are recipes for things like brownies and cookies that have a low glycemic index and at the same time, are really yummy. :D

the book is called "The g.i. Diet" by Rick Gallop. I am sure you can find it on amazon. I bought it right at a local bookstore. if you can't find it on amazon.com you will probably find it at barnesandnoble.com. this diet is great for anyone, but especially for people with diabetes or people who have a family history of diabetes. I don't have it, but it runs in my family. good luck!

I haven't been following a particular diet plan, but this seems really interesting. Even if I didn't follow it, it would be good information to make better choices in what I do eat. I don't think I have ever bought a weight loss book, but I am going to get this one. I'm really concerned about hubby's weight, and having some better options to give him might get him more interested in losing it. Thanks for the info.

Just start feeding hubby different food and he won't notice the difference. ;) If it tastes good, he won't worry. Just change it up on him. Then suggest he do something different like take meal xyz with him for lunch during work

I think it is great that you guys are interested in trying this program! believe me, if I can eat the way he tells you to in the book, anyone can. I am a major chocoholic and carb craver. now that I am eating whole grains and more produce, I actually am not having the cravings that i used to. and the other night, i took the kids out for pizza, and i had 2 slices and a huge salad with fat free dressing. of course, I made sure i had breakfast and lunch and a healthy snack in the afternoon. that way i was not starving and i didn't want to eat the whole pizza. and then i didn't feel guilty, so I didn't backslide. honestly, the only thing I have given up completely is fast food. that was hard but I am glad i did. that food is filled with carcinogens and trans fats! well, good luck and let me know how you like the book/program!
