I'm new, any advice?

Hi y'all from Kelowna BC,
I have been flirting with serious running for about two years now for weight loss and better health, (I'm 5'8 and 134 lbs, diet doen't work, three kids, must bake cookies...end up eating them) but otherwise get in some pretty good nutrition like fish and veggies, however I can't get past the 3km mark, I do some fartlek training too, I think I might be predisposed to sprinting, I loose mental focus and get discouraged at the thought of longer runs:( so I am wondering if HIIT would be a good thing to start to loose about 10 lbs, but will I loose cardio benifit acheived with my longer runs, will I be able to do them again easily if I take a break? Also I live in the mountains so perhaps in the prarie my runs would be longer, I dunno. I would like to be able to do longer runs some day, maybe a 5 or 10km run just for stamena and to feel like I've acheived something, am I afraid of failure?

I welcome your comments

I started HIIT training about a month ago. I think it works better for me than long range jogging since I'm also more prone to sprinting. I've kept with it better than any other exercise routine I've tried.
