I'm a sugar addict

Hi,

I have a compulsion to eat, mainly sweet things. I need to get rid of it.

That's why I've googled for a forum like this.

I don't have many pounds to lose, but any pound too many makes me feel really bad.

I'd like to lose 6 pounds. Maybe 8.

I'd love to have a kik friend in the same situation, for mutual support.

I'm very sportive and fit. I run 1h 2 times per week. Some weeks I also swim 1h and/or cycle 2h. I could and would like to run more often, but I had to cut down on frequency and speed due to ligament problems.

When I was running more, it was easier to keep the weight off. I was running about 26 miles per week. Now, a fraction of that, because of knee problems.

hello am new on here too and here is what I know from my personal experience
Our body needs sugar for energy however sugar has to be taken in its natural state and the most natural source of sugar I know are fruits.
I am well aware that there are schools of thought who think fruits should be consumed minimally I tend to disagree because people generally conflate real fruits (fresh) with packaged fruits which are absolutely not the same not in taste nor nutrient --that said

the sweet foods you eat are a spike and crash source of blood sugar so to answer your question I will advise you learn to feed your body with the right type of sugar which for me like i said is fruit now it is expedient to eat:

1 fruits whole, that way you are consuming fructose as well as fibre, sodium and other nutrients present in the particular fruit

2 In season fruits this implies eating locally produced fruits imported fruits IMHO isn't real fruit

3 where feasible buy your fruits + other food produce from a farmer's market


I personally eat loads of fruits but I only eat what is available in my locality have gone grocery shopping today and bought oranges, tangerine. and when i eat these fruits I eat them whole only the seeds are thrown away.
I hardly ever crave sugar and when I do it isnt the same way I craved it when consuming bad foods. from my experience once I made the right dietary choices I found my body relaxed and could heal and amazingly also started to crave fruits that i ate as a child which these days are almost extinct
and talking about cravings. you know sometimes i feel the need to crush and at times like this i eat vegetables like carrots and other plant based snack foods that are local to my environment

There is so much sugar in our diets, in fact most of us eat 4 x more than the recommended amount. And its hard to know where it is because it's in so many products from bread to tomato sauce. Try and limit the amount of tinned, pre-packaged food you buy and cook from scratch and eat whole foods rather than processed. Fruit juice is a biggie when it comes to sugar as it takes for example 3-4 squeezed oranges to make a glass of OJ and we glug it down in a millisecond, whereas you wouldnt eat 4 oranges in one go right...fruit juice keeps the fruit sugar but you lose out on all the fibre from the real whole fruit. Also flavored water, flavored yogurts and and pre-packaged food that has sugar listed as one of the first 3 ingredients will be high in sugar so avoid those. Eat a diet high in protein and healthy fats to keep you full for longer and opt for dark chocolate or sugar-free peppermints if you have a sweet craving. Sugar is as addictive as cocaine, they have found this in studies testing the brain as it lights up the same dopamine (feel good hormones) in the brain when you eat sugar, which makes it hard to quit. Start slowly and wean yourself off where you know you're having sugar (sugar in your tea or coffee, sugar sodas etc, and then eat a high protein, healthy fat diet, and avoid as many pre-packaged foods, and when you want to indulge in a sugary treat make sure its a high quality food not a twinkie but a small piece of dark decandent chocolate cake. That's much more satisfying and will keep you off sugar more.

I would be interested in being a supportive partner with you. I think we have a lot in common, as far as how you described yourself. I run regularly, and also cycle and swim, and just have a few extra pounds I'd love to lose. I too feel pretty addicted to sweets. I know how to eat, and have heard and read tons on cutting back sugar ie all that was stated above. I don't know if it actually helps to have someone struggling with sweets try to support you or not, but it's worth a try. I just keep getting the same advice, all of which I know, but the knowledge that I should avoid sugar doesn't make it any easier. Perhaps having a connection with someone to turn to when we want to give in to the compulsion could really help.
