I'm a noob with excuses. HELP!!

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'm using the name "Galactus" because when I'm hungry, I feel like I could eat THE PLANET.

Everyone has their excuses, but I guess excuses could be obstacles that one chooses to do nothing about. Here are my obstacles, and here's my plan to tackle them one by one:

(1) I don't get enough sleep. Running on four hours makes your day hard, much less going to the gym and running for 30 minutes on this amount of sleep. I know how important a full night's sleep is, especially for those who are trying to get back in shape. Sleep regenerates energy (duh), the immune system, rebalances chemicals (including hormones) that control your mood, skin health and appetite.

Solution: Get more sleep, and do so regularly. At the very least on weeknights.

(2) I don't have a lot of money. In fact, to put it more realistically, I'm broke. So that means I don't have a big budget for fancy diet or organic foods and aids.

Solution: Stick to the basics--cheap but nutriet rich veggies, meats, fruits, nuts. Take vitamins.

(3) My friends (and my roommate) eat what I wish I could. Unfortunately, I have friends that have the metabolisms of five-year-olds. So when they eat and I'm out of my healthy food, I pretty much have to eat what they have at the house. No. 2 above is what makes this the hardest.

Solution: ???

(4) I get discouraged a lot, because my goal seems so far away. I'm 5'1" and 190lbs. I don't look like it, I'd even guess someone my size was 160 at the most, but I am. I used to be 145. That is where I was happiest, and that is where I want to be. 45 lbs.

Solution: I joined this forum. I'm coming here to gather encouragement from other people that might be going through the same thing as me.

So thanks in advance for your help and encouragement. Good luck to all!

Wow looks like you're off to a pretty good start. You've covered some pretty good basic principles of weight loss. Now there's nothing left to it but to do it. Welcome to the forums, good luck and enjoy your stay :)

Sometimes we have to plan with the amount of money we do have. There are healthy inexpensive TV dinners out there. That is what I started with. A good breakfast, TV dinner for lunch, a TV dinner for supper, a fruit for snack. These foods would get you to your goal weight. Banquet dinners about .88 cents ea. at Walmarts. Keep a jar of peanut butter and bread on the shelf. I know it must be hard trying to go to school and manage to keep healthy food to eat. If your friends see that you are serious maybe they will help you plan for the foods you need to lose weight and stay healthy. Eat healthy and get some good exercise, and some time out for you in between your studies. This will help you to get more sleep. Just think portion sizes.

Welcome to the WLF and take care of you!!

Thank you both! Those are great tips!

I'm not actually in school (yet); I have a full-time job as an IT project manager that I just started. I will keep those tips in mind for when I go for my masters though...I think it would be good to remember to give myself a break every now and then.

I'm looking forward to this journey!

I'd say skip the vitamins. With the evidence I've seen they don't actually do much, and you can use that money to buy more nutritious vegetables. Frozen veggies are cheaper than fresh, are easier to prepare, and don't lose much nutrition through freezing. Just watch out for the ones with added sauces which can be full of fat and sodium.

I'd have to disagree with the banquet meals. Cheap, yes, but full of processed crap and sodium. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd need at least two for a complete meal. Of course, if that's all you can afford then by all means.

You seem like you've got it down. I lost all my weight on a college budget. Most healthier options aren't that expensive. Just don't fall for the diet supplements. Fruit/veg are cheap. Fresh chicken/fish isn't bad if you find bulk or on sale.

Remember to keep your grains 100% whole, the meats lean, the veggies green, and FIBER FIBER FIBER! Oh. And water. Lots of it. GL!

I want to share this saying with you. Life is like climbing a mountain you can only take small steps at a time.

Don't get discouraged identify where you want to be. (THE BIG GOAL). Then break that goal into (SMALL MANAGEABLE GOALS). If you think about you how much you have to lose and how long it will take you will probably quit so just concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other.

As for food sleep and exercise you sound like you know what you are talking about. eat healthy exercise long and sleep plenty.

Another quote that is so powerful is: ''When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breath then you will be successful''. Eric Thomas
