i have no idea how to make a smoothie!

i tried once.. it tasted like puke.. ok I dont know about that - it was disgusting.... it was like i added pureed fruit to milk. gag

how do i make one? a good one?

Smoothies are pretty much whatever you want them to be.

You need a liquid base: water, milk, juice
You need a solid ingredient to add texture and flavor: usually fruit, sometimes veg

Then you can add other optional ingredients for additional nutrition, flavor, texture, etc.:
Seeds, nuts, fiber, protein powder, yogurt, silken tofu, oil, bran, flax, coconut ... the list goes on and on and on.

Put everything in a blender and blend it until it's milkshake consistency. Some people add ice cubes to make it slushier. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

Experiment to find the types of flavors and textures that you like the best. My usual smoothie blend is frozen blueberries, a little water, protein powder, and flax seed. Sometimes I throw in some chopped baby spinach for additional nutrition.

Edited - here's a site with a TON of smoothie recipes. Maybe you can find something here to use as a guideline or starting point.

HAHAHAHAHA, I was certainly not expecting this to be about smoothies. I'm a chef, but, unfortunately, I'm not a smoothie maker kind of guy. Sowwy. :(

I'm approaching 40 and made my very first smoothie yesterday! The smoothie maker came with recipes on different types to make .. but I just made my own. I used 2 vanilla yogurts, a bunch of strawberries, apple slices and ice. That was it. It wasn't bad- I never tried a smoothie EVER so I had no idea what to expect.

It was OK- I think if I added bananas in it would have been better, and I'm going to do that next time.

The consistency was - not appealing to me.. let's just leave it at that.. it felt like I had a mouthful of something else.. weird.. but the taste was alright. :)

A blender by any other name. :)

I wouldn't pay extra for something with the name "smoothie" ... a basic blender will do exactly the same thing.

ok - there are such things as smoothie makers???

Yes lol- well, my mother bought one off QVC years ago and it's been sitting with all the other things she buys off QVC and never uses. She gave it to me at least 2 years ago and I never even opened it until yesterday. It's called Smoothie Jr..

lol, i think my mom bought smoothie blender too a couple years ago...can't say i've used it though. the blender works just fine!

i use: cup of soy milk, cup of vanilla yogurt, 100 calorie vanilla protein packet, and strawberries. i'm not a big fan of shakes, but this doesn't taste too bad. i also throw in ice sometimes or throw in in the freezer for a bit.

Try not to use milk, but fruit juice or something similar, and don't add too much fruit. That will make the texture a little less.....weird. Also, if your smoothie maker can handle it (mine can, but I broke my mom's...uuups), throw ice cubes into the whole thing, and you'll have kind of a slushie/smoothie thing, which is nice on the hotter days.

Yogurt is nice, as well as ice cream, but that gives it a 'heavier', more creamy texture, and that's just not everybody's cup of tea....or cup of smoothie, as the case might be.

Yepp, try yogurt or even ice cream if you like it. Personally, I like buttermilk in them, but you have to be careful with calories and fat and stuff in buttermilk, please, a lot of people don't like it. Might be worth a try though.

I've had good results with 1 part yogurt and 1 part fruit (1/2 cup or 1 cup each), some ice, and a splash of fruit juice in a blender. Add some flax to get sneaky with some omegas.
