im 18 male and im training to join the army

well as it says above im 18, male and im planning on joining the army, my problem is that im SUPER SUPER unfit, i'm 5 ft 11" and i weigh 14 stone 3lbs, not all fat though but tbh thr fat out weighs the muscle haha, any ways ill get back to the point. I am soon looking to do my fitness test which includes 1.5 mile run in under 11 minutes i think it is. NOW heres the embarrasing part, when i go jogging i jog for about half a mile if im lucky normally around about 0.450 miles coz i have one of them distance measuring things and im totally nackered!. My muscles dont ache its just my chest feels like its closing up and i get really out of breath. I take deep breaths and exhale slowly not too slow though lol. I am looking to join within about 3 - 4 months but to do that i need to improove my fitness alot, i want to be able to do about 3 miles before i go in so is their any chance any one could give me some tips on how to get fitter faster? please? and is their any suppliments i could take to help improve my fitness. im fine with my strength at doing other physical things its just jogging/running. thanks.

You have your work cut out for you, but you can do it. Unfortunately, there is no magic pill to increase the number of mitochondria and capillarization in your muscles. That takes time, but you have enough time to make some very nice improvements.

To get better at running and being able to run a sub-8:00 mile, you need to start right away. Go out and run as far as you can before you are winded (1/2 mile?), walk until catch your breath and your pulse gets under 120, then run as far as you can again until you are again out of breath. Do this for 3 miles the first day.

You may be too sore to do it the next day so you may have to take a rest day in between. On the off days, you can work on the other Army entry requirements, e.g., pullups? pushups? situps?

As for supplements, they won't help you.

thanks, well today i used my sweat suit because i want to loose some weight aswell. I jogged with my mate about 1/2 a mile then walked for about 2 mins then jogged about 1/2 a mile again and then we set off walking back and we walked about half a mile then jogged half a mile back. (were both un fit fat b*****ds lol) and i was nackered, the amount of sweat that came out of my suit was unbelieveable, any ways back to the subject. How long do you think it will take me before i can jog a mile? i know it varies for everyone but im really new to this so any guesses will be apprechiated. As for pullups i can do around 25 - 30, situps i can do 70 and pushups i can do around the 60 mark so im not to bad at them. What is the required amount of pullups, situps and pushups needed to gain entry into the army?.

another question is how fast would i have to be jogging to do 1.5 miles in under 10 minutes? sorry for these stupid questions but my strongest subject at school wasnt maths lol. thanks again.

First things first. Don't use a sweat suit or a trash bag to increase sweating. That is a good way to get heat stroke. Plus the "weight" you lose is water which you gain right back.

Yes, it is impossible to answer accurately, but I'll take a wild guess and say in 3 weeks you'll be doing a slow jog for a mile if you run every day or nearly every day.

I don't know the required numbers, but I am sure you exceed all those requirements as all three of those metrics are impressive, even for a youngster.

No problem - math was my strongest subject (I'm half Asian;). To break 10 minutes for 1.5 miles, you would have to do 6:40 mile pace which is a brisk pace by most standards.

When was the last time you had a physical? 18yo kids shouldn't get that winded after 1/2 mile unless you are badly out of shape and if you were that badly out of shape I wouldn't expect you to be able to do 25 - 30 pullups and 60 pushups. Odd.

OH but it also says that whilst wearing the sweat suit it also helps u loose calories and over time helps you to loose weight quicker, when i do go jogging i take a drink of water with me so i dont think i will get dehydrated or anything and as with the heat stroke i go at night time when its chilly any ways but if you suggest i stop using it then i will becase you know more about this than me lol.

Yeah im going jogging every night 7 days a week and some times i go on the morning aswell.

I wish i was good with my math :) im more of a science and literature person haha. and yeah that is quite a brisk jog lol thanks. As for a physical i havent had one since i was at school, i have been going to the gym for about 6 months but never used any cardio machines thats why i have good strength but rubbish cardio but im stopping going to the gym and just going to get my fitness up with jogging and using weights in my bag and wrist and ankle weights.

i wouldn't recommend a sweat suit either, cause (as already said) the weight you're losing is water which you'll just put back on the next time you drink. I would say just keep joggign everyday, time yourself over the distances and eventually you'll be speeding up , you might also want to just chuck some 'longer distance' stuff in to mix it up a bit cause your body can get used to doing the same exercise very quickly and can even get to the point where your body starts to regress. Just mix it up (shall i go for distance or speed today?)

When I joined the Army my recruiter said I had to pass the PT test too. Then I got to basic training and was one of only 2 out of my platoon that passed it. Turns out I had to pass the test before the end of Basic Training. I'm not sure what country you're in. The US Army didn't require a pre-enlistment PT test is why I'm wondering.

Good luck anyway.

My suggestion for getting quick cardio gains is by HIIT, check the sticky or just search HIIT and Running.
