Sport If I were to stop eating and drinking ...

Sport Fitness
Hello all,
Assume I'm a healthy male of thirty-something years and of the correct weight for a someone 5'8" tall. Now, If I were to stop eating and drinking, does anyone know what areas of my body would be used up first for my body's sustenance? Is it the fat stores, muscle groups, something else or a combination of various groups simultaneously (but then in what proportions and at what rates?).

Probably an odd question but it's something I've been wondering for a while.
Thanks very much )

Yes, I know. Your body would store fat and eat muscle for energy. Without water you die within a few days. Without food you slowly kill your self. Metabolism is destroyed fairly quickly. Skin looses color. Liver begins freaking out. Heart palpitations occur. etc.

Thanks )

Thank you for your replies. As I understand it, the muscles get eaten away first? I'm feeling a little hungry and thirsty all of a sudden ...

Without water you can die in less than a week.

You can survive without food for months.

Um, I think the story about your body using the muscle before the stored fat is just wishful thinking by people that really like eating. I guess this is still unexplored area we're on, but I do believe that the first thing that the body will use for energy when in starvation mode is the stored fat. that's why it's there.

I've lost big amounts of fat, and my abs didn't go anywhere... What I've gotten out of fasting and restricting calories is losing just fat.... Muscle on the other hand I've found very hard to get rid of. but that's just me. bodies are different.

Sorry earthtoeva... in the nicest tone seriously because you can never read emotions on these boards... your post is just wrong. It's proven that the body stores fat in times of starvation mode (or when it thinks it is starving).

Your body goes through a process called gluconeogenesis and uses muscle breakdown, or synthesis, to form ATP and glucose. That is it's main energy source. Not fat.

If the process continues long enough the body will lose muscle AND fat. Think of an anorexic. They are literally skin and bones. No fat nor muscle.
