I was told that you shouldn't eat in the morning before you exercise.

I was also told your metabolism stays in sleep mode till you eat in the morning.

So shouldn't you eat before exercising?

hi there,

I posted the same question in here and got very mixed views...I think it depends on you and what your body needs. I have heard both arguments for and against and think like anything about dieting it comes down to what you need to do for you and what works for you.

I have been exercising in the morning and evenings now for about 4 months, my exercise in the morning is cardio and I don't eat, my exercise in the evening is a mixture of cardio and strength and I do eat prior to doing it....either way I have not noticed any difference and have had great success with my exercise programme.

I have heard that if you are doing strength training you should have something to eat prior to exercising.

Well.. this leads into my next questions.. how much food do you have to have to turn your metabolism on? Does a large glass of water do the trick? I think everyone agrees on having a glass of water in the morning.

I don't really know anything about turning metabolism on, only that exercise and foods both rev it up:p I have heard that if you do want to eat prior to exercise...just a tiny amount, eg vegetable juice etc

Yes water is essential, prior to and during your workout if possible

for some ppl, they get different reactions to foods in the morning before exercising. I suppose it depends on what type of a person you are, and it depends on what you eat. I absolutely cannot have eggs, or bread in the morning before a workout, i just feel eww. But i do like to maybe have an orange, or an apple. I suggest though, not eating a huge meal, since you don't want to be in digestion mode while you're running.

But if u can eat oatmeal, eggwhites n such right before a workout n be fine with it, sure, go ahead.

about the metabolism thing, i heard that what you eat yesterday, effects your metabolism today. I usually have a scoop of whey protein before going to bed.also keep in mind, if the last meal you eat is at 7pm...n u wake up at 6-7am, you havent eaten since 12hrs ago, so, its important to have somethin healthy in the morning.

It is funny you say that about the car and the fuel thing neenaw, I work out really hard in the morning and have never eaten prior to exercise it would make me feel yuck doing cardio on food....anyway I guess we are all different.

What you were told is not true. Research has shown that people do not lose more fat if they do cardio on an empty stomach. Research shows that people may burn more calories/fat when they exercise before breakfast, but that it's a trivial amount. However, those who do exercise before breakfast are hungrier throughout the day than those who eat before exercise and usually end up eating more and are more likely to binge.
Also, workouts tend to be less intense because as said above, the body has no fuel.
Of course, there are those who regularly do cardio on an empty stomach and say they have good results and feel well. Noo one fits in to a specific mold.

You should NEVER do weights when you wake up. Doing any exercise when you wake up is a bit risky because it's the time when injury is most likely.

I'm one of those people who when they exercise on an empty stomach, they feel pain. It was a pain in my side, so eating before is for me.

If I am hungry in the morning I eat a bowl of k special before I exercise. I wait 2 hours though after my breakfast before I do my cardio so my food is digested.

I got that pain in my side this morning.. ofcourse I was doing my walk at 2 pm.. hadn't ate since around 8pm the previous day.... And forgot to eat that morning. lol
I have generally started to have a hard boiled egg and a low fat cereal bar in the morning before walking. But I noticed my stomach tends to be a bit odd. But I love hard boiled eggs... for me its an immediate appetite supresser. :)

Ahh if you can wait that two hours for it to digest, then breakfast is a good idea, I always eat breakfast, but because I do my morning cardio at 6am I have no way of eating before I exercise, I never ever miss breakfast though, it is the most important meal.

Hey Avi, sorry I'm a bit late to this thread, but I thought I would give you a bit of info from Oprah's 'make the connection' book. There are no specific figures for it because its difficult to measure metabolism, but although food does boost your metabolism, exercise boosts it even more, quite dramatically more according to the graph in the book. And just getting up and moving about will increase your metabolism from sleep mode, it is just that eating and exercising give it a further boost.

Also, eating before exercising does mean that you won't get to burning fat straight away, but if you eat 50 cals worth of fruit, that will take no time at all to be burnt and it might mean that you are not distracted by a rumbly tummy or feeling faint.

Hope this has helped.

Do whatever makes you feel the best. If eating before working out feels best then do it. If not, then do something else. Your metabolism is always on. It may fluxuate throught the day, but it does so on its own. You really have little control over it. So just do what feel sthe best for you

I don't think it really matters when you exercise, just as long as you DO IT! LOL. I can't exercise in the morning because I need to go to school at 7:00, and I just don't have the willpower to get up early in the morning to work out, but I always work out after school (if I'm not to overloaded with homework). Alot of people even work out in the evening after their evening meal and get great results. My dad is going to get us a membership at "ProFitness" really soon, we'd be going right after I get out of school, so I'm really looking forward to that.

I was told by my trainer to eat an hour before working out because if I worked out too soon after eating i felt nauseous and dizzy but I felt the same way when I didn't eat at all. When I ate I had more energy and my metabolism picked up.

I don't often exercise early , but when I have done, I have opted to have a banana or oat bar / orange juice before I run - and then something more substantial when I return home.

I'm of the eat before you exercise school - but as others have said, do what you feel is right - any exercise is better than none.
