I want to be a Jogger When i Get down to 170..advice..?

Hey guys, currently i'm losing weight and do light cardio and some weights (just started this mornig lol) and i weight 230 (male/5'8) and my ideal weight is 170 my dr told me, plus i just want to hit that for a personal goal...i can't wait.

Anyway, when i'm like 195 or less i want to start jogging. In the past when i was 195/200ish i could only jog for 6 minutes tops, that was a decent paced jog..not even that fast.

The main thing is that i've always wanted to be a steady jogger, yet i got too discouraged cause i couldn't go for that long. I'm hoping if i'm at my ideal weight of 170 jogging will be more fun, like going for 15-20 minutes jogs. I was never able to complete a mile long jog..just a half or more. The way my doc put it, he said picture being 170 and carrying a 25lb back pack (being 195lbs etc), that would tire you out faster.

He said if you where 170, you'd be able to go for alot longer.

yeah start working on it now id say because its a awsome way to loose weight ... um and add as little as a minute each time you go out ... you should get some pretty good results :) good luck

I read an article and am following it now. It was a cross country running article. What you do is get on the treadmill and run for one minute at 6 mph then walk for 29 minutes. The next day you run for two minutes and walk for tweenty-eight, so on and so on until you run for 30 minutes straight. I've incorporated this into my work out routine, where I run seven days a week. Yesterday I finished minute number seven and have increased my walking pace to 4 mph. Also If I can do it Im sure you can, I weigh 265 at 6'1. So go get on that treadmill boy!

I had similiar goals when I wanted to loose 30 lbs. I would recommend you set a goal to run a 5 k. It would be up to you to set the time frame. However, I set it my time frame to be in 3 months. Honestly, setting this goal provided the most results becuase it allowed me focus on what I needed to do.

When I was heavier I could not run at all and my calves hurt every time I tried to run. The approach I took was the following: On days that I lifted (excluding leg day): I would do intervals on the treadmill for 20 minutes a session. I would increase the speed in 4 - 1 minute intervals from a walking speed to a jogging speed on the highest interval. On my leg day (before the work out). I would go on the treadmill and walk on an incline for 15 minutes. This helped my calves big time.

On cardio days I would run outside if it was warm. I decided I needed to run 30 minutes straight in order to complete the 5 k. My approach was to jog as much as possible during that 30 minutes and was never hard on myself for walking. In about a month I was able to jog 30 minutes straight and acheived the 5 k when the time arrived.

If you're persitant without trying to kill yourself. Your body will "feel like" it will want to jog after a while. At least that was my experience.

I would recommend getting an MP3 player for jogging outside. The music helps take your mind off the goal and brings enjoyment to the exercise (which is really most important if you wish to continue).

I hope this helps.

It's mind over matter, if she don't mind it don't matter. No really....I just got my fat ass in the gym (5'07" 238 lbs). Don't allow your weight to dictate what you are/not capable of doing. I've often heard "the body quits before the mind". In your case you made up your mind.

I started out with slow speed jogs and went for distance for the first two weeks, 1-2 miles. Weeks 2-3, I increased the time to 20 minutes at around 5mph. I'm in week six now and I'm doing 20 minutes at a starting speed of 6mph, when I start feeling tired I increase the speed or incline. I have only dropped 10 lbs, but my cardio has improved. I don't get winded walking to the fridge or looking for my TV remote.
