I want one of these as a pet!

I just got a birthday card with an adorable picture of two hyacinth (blue) macaws on the front. Here's the picture:

I've been admiring the card since I got it because the birds are so cute.

I started doing some internet research. They're an endangered species, but you can buy them to keep as pets. I looked up prices and they sell for about $8,500-$15,000 per bird. Not bad right? :D

They're the world's largest parrot, and even though their beak has the power to bite a finger off, they are very gentle and rarely bite.

After considerable thought I decided that it would be just to much of a financial burden to take one on. I would much rather buy a car.

I guess I can just admire my birthday card. My chickens are great pets and cheap at $1.25 per chick.

Yes, however, a large portion of the population of the species is captive. Because their natural environment is being destroyed, breeders are trying to breed as many as possible. Basically it's wrong to keep one as a pet if you do not intend on breeding it. I agree it is sad. The species is basically being kept alive by breeders. They need to stop chopping down the rain forest so they can live where they're supposed to live.

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

Derwyddon - I thought you were Karky with that avatar

Just my opinion but that is WAY to spend on a bird! You could buy 10 pure bred puppies for that price...not that you'd want ten but ya kno. Sure they're nice to look at but what can you do with a bird? You can't play with them that for sure...not to mention the huge beak on them!

And you cant teach them to lift weights and steal stuff like a monkey, hell i reckon i could teach that thing how to clean my house!

Is this some kind of a sick joke - getting an endangered species as a pet? The OP deserves a pat with my stick. Without regarding the illegality of such a proposal, I'm not in favour of getting parrots or any other bird and locking them in a cage.

The thought of keeping a bird in a cage horrifies me. What is the mentallity of someone who wants to take a flying bird, stick it in a cage and deny it its freedom for life?

If you read a little more about the Hyacinth Macaw you'll find that it's endangered because it was over hunted in the 80's to meet the demand for them as pets

Their figures in the wild are now recovering without the help of private collectors

man your such a busy body!
How can anyone get satisfaction from locking up a bird in a small cage? That is cruel, really cruel. A bird should be free to fly about not be confined to a cage for the rest of its life. Some people need to get facts drilled into them by the Drill Sargent.

As for those who would like to have me as their pet, my biceps may not be as big as some of yours but my martial art skills may be better than yours. :)

Yellow belt in jujitsu? I would turn up like a ninja and fly through the air so by the time you heard me speak you would already be KO'd.

err.. sarcasm, maybe? Besides, I can just inject some steroids and go on a roid rage.. then I'm unstoppable!

Unless you are positive you can deal with birds don't get one. Having a cockatiel, conure, or whatever parrot is a pain in the butt. My boyfriend has a conure and all it does is **** everywhere and scream when it wants a pecan.

I agree with you on the cage thing. I remember years and years ago when i was younger i knew someone who use to let her bird out of its on a daily basis and let it roam about the house. Obviously, the house was closed up when she did this and the bird was supervised but looking back, i think it's a kind thing to do for the bird....How bout a large outdoor cage?

That's kinda why I don't like zoos. I mean, they are cool, and have an entertainment purpose, as well as doing some good, but I don't like to see the animals cooped up. Dogs are the pet of choice for me. My sweet baby can roam the house (sleep a lot), roam the yard (sleep in the yard), and run wild in the park or around the block (to get tired and sleep later). I love dogs!

Oh sorry, this was about birds? :D

I agree with the idea that wild birds should not be caged. When they are forced to live in a small area like that, they get stressed and do all sorts of destructive behaviors like pulling their feathers out and biting. It is kind of ridiculous that someone would spend $15,000 on a single bird.

But I have no problem caging domestic birds like chickens. Chickens probably wouldn't be able to survive on their own in the wild. Same with the doves I used to own. Domesticated birds are generally unintelligent and are an easy target for predators because they have has most of their instinct bred out of them.

But yes, it is pretty depressing to see all of those wild animals in the zoo. None of those animals look very happy.

As opposed to how "they look" in the wild, where you routinely see them?

Whenever I watch nature shows half the animals end up starving and dying by the end of it. I'm not saying a life of captivity is a good thing, but come on, "they look unhappy"?

i love that!!!!!
