Hello, my name is Jacob, Im 19 yrs old and i struggle with my weight. After i was done with school my weight was a huge problem and i really wanna lose it. Im considering getting a Gastric Sleeve done to help with the overeating. Then stick to strict diet and get to my goal weight and put on muscle. I wanna do this so i have a body i love and break the obesity in my family so when i have kids one day they have healthy parents to look up to. Im looking for suggestions on meal plans that are cheap, work life friendly, and simple. I can do the strictness. Thank you!

Hey Jacob, welcome to the forum!

I long considered a gastric sleeve or something like it, but in the end never got one. Now I am glad for that, it is possible to lose weight without one, and I suspect the "stick to strict diet and get to my goal weight and put on muscle" is no easier after the surgery than it would be without it.

The first thing I suggest is that you start a diary on the Weight Loss Diary page, https://weight-loss.fitness.com/forums/weight-loss-diary.9/ . And tell us more about yourself and your goals. Things like height, current weight, goal weight, any medical conditions we should know about, and anything you think might help us better understand you. More information would help people advise and support, and you will get more attention on the Diary thing.

I suggest you set a reasonable calorie goal, for a 19 year old guy something in the 1,500 calorie a day range would be reasonable. Then count all of your calories, record them, and report daily here, in your diary. I have been doing that for over a year and a half and it has really helped me. I use the myfitnesspal.com app, and like it for tracking. If you do that people can see what you are eating and advise, doing that really did help me. I started with food as that is the most important factor in weight loss. Exercise can help, but getting your calories under control will give you the best shot at loosing weight. You can also talk about your exercise and exercise plans in your diary, again that would let people better advise and support.

Glad to have you here with us, you can do this! And I am looking forward to watching you!

Hi Jacob and welcome to the forum. One question: if you can already do the strictness why do you need surgery? I have nothing against bariatric surgery for people who need it but it IS major surgery, which always har some big risks. Plus of course even when all goes well it will influence the rest of your life: you'll likely never be able to eat "normally" again and need supplements to make for the fact that you won't be able to eat enough volume. Which is no doubt better and healthier than staying morbidly obese but maybe not the normal, healthy example you want to be for your potential children. So if you say you can deal with the strictness anyway, why get the sleeve at all?

If you don't mind my asking: how much weight do you have to lose?

I wanna lose about 100 pounds atleast get where my weight is supposed to be for my BMI.

That´s a clear goal, and if you´re able to make lasting changes you´re likely to achieve it. I was just wondering why the surgery. A gastric sleeve will not make you lose weight faster if you say you´re already capable of being strict with your diet. It WILL make it a little easier to stay strict (by making you feel awful when you don´t stick to the rules), certainly at first. Again: nothing against bariatric surgery when it´s needed but I think it´s important people don´t expect TOO much of it.

Adding to what LaMaria said, If your goal is to build muscle later on, then the sleeve may stop you from achieving that due to not being able to consume adequate nutrition for building muscle.

Im saying like i can do a strict diet but my issue is i over eat and i do it out of boredom and on occasion depression
I have a similar problem and was able to loose over 100 pounds without surgery. It can be done. I suggest you give it a hard try first, I think the surgery is better than being obese, but not as good for you as figuring out how to lose the weight without surgery. And at your age it really is a lifelong thing, I suggest you think about it very carefully.

Either way you will be welcome here, we only give advice, we don't judge and we know everyone has to find their own way.

Ok, so it sounds to me like you need food that really fills you up without adding too many calories. Fresh or frozen fruit and veg are going to be your friends there, with smaller amounts of protein, fat, and carbs to round out the nutrition profile. Have you ever tried counting calories exactly for a week or two?

I plan on doing a diet consisting of chicken and vegetables. Along with a gallon water a day. I've heard amazing results from it.

If you can keep it up that should indeed help you lose weight quickly, unless you go crazy on portion sizes. Try to make sure there's enough variety to keep it at least a little fun though. Even the most efficient diet can only work for life as long as you can stick to it for life. Best of luck!
