hello, im very annoyed at this whole situation at the moment im a 28 year old male and im 5'10 and was 254 lb and i dont want to be. recently for past 4 days i have been eating only 1800 kcal and excersising so i have a ruff kcal defecit if 3500 a day which is ruffly 1lb of fat burnt a day, i even created a cool excel work sheet to record how many kcals go in and how many go out.
the problem is, is that my calculations have me at been around -2.5 lb (252.5 lb) around about now but im actually now around 260 lb so ive gained 6lb. whats going on?
-im eating the 1800 kcal they say you need so your body doesnt go into starvation mode.
-my resting metabolism is 2801.47 kcal a day if i just stayed in bed.
-and i end up burning up to 5471 kcal a day which after eating leaves a 1750-3500 defecit a day.
even if i was a little bit generous on the amount of kcal i burnt in each excersise i dont see how or why i would gain this much weight. any help or advice would be greatly appreaciated.
thankyou
luke

Take some time...

Your question is a very common one. One I asked myself many MANY times.

So I will try to answer simply and quickly.

DONT RELY ON THE SCALE!!!!!!

Just because you arent losing a pound a day on the scale doesn't mean changes aren't happenening. The human body is an amazing machine and no 2 are alike. I currently haven't lost a gram in 2 weeks, and I have dramatically upped my workouts recently and still continue to eat the same diet I was eating when I was dropping 3-4 pounds a week.

Why? No idea. But, my clothes are much less tight and I have gone down a belt loop. If I only valued the measurement on the scale I too would be upset and more than a little let down.

However,

Like I said, my clothes are not as tight as 2 weeks ago at the same weight, my knees hurt less on stairs, my lower back isnt as stiff as it used to be and I don't get those annoying little "twinges" when I pick up something heavy. I had to increase my workout duration, not because of the lack of weight loss, but because the exercise was getting too easy..... Those are all WAY better indications of health and fitness than a collection of springs and pulleys can ever tell you. I gain 5 pounds everytime I weigh myself on my shitty home scale compared to the (likely equally as shitty) scale at the gym.

Long story short, 4 days is WAY WAY WAY too short a time period to tell if your efforts are having an effect. Don't let it drag you down, because speaking from my own personal experiences and 35 years of weight problems, I know, getting into that funk is what causes me to over eat and give up.... Patience is the key to winning this battle, I know, because I am finally winning myself after decades of trying. Don't let negativity stop you like it did me, soooooo many times.

Give yourself some time and keep up the good work. Some people just take longer to get started. I know for me it usually took a month of hard work before I finally looked at the scale and cried "It moved IT MOVED!!!"

Give it a couple weeks, without starving or over exerting yourself and see how it goes.

Starvation mode is not triggered at a particular caloric intake.

Fat loss does not automatically equal weight loss. Remember, weight takes into account a lot more than body fat.

If the longer term trend doesn't start ticking down over 2+ weeks time, something if most likely off with your calculations. Wait it out. If there's no progress... come back to this thread and we'll troubleshoot ya.

Best to you.

don't rely too much on the scale they can lie to you!! but don't worry because this sort of thing happens all the time and it's because your not losing mass but you're losing fat so congratulations!

What is a non-calorie diet? Sounds like something that will ultimately lead to death. Not sure how happy that would make him.

Yep, 4 days isn't long enough. A lot of patience is needed for this whole weight loss thing.

lukem, can I ask you if you've just started exercising now, or were you quite active before as well? Because if you've just started, your body is having to build a large amount of muscle to cope with the new demands of the exercise you're doing, and muscle weighs far more than an equivalent amount of fat. I would also look at your water consumption because fat burning can't happen without it. Good luck and keep posting your progress! :waving:

It's highly unlikely that anyone would gain 4lbs of muscle in 4 days. It just doesn't work that way. :)

But I will say with everyone else ... PATIENCE! :)

At 254 lbs, a healthy rate of loss is going to be about 2.5 lbs per week. Don't obsess so much over the numbers and just eat well, exercise, and give your body time to adjust.

Also keep in mind that you might not see a loss for the first week or so. Some people are lucky and see immediate results, and some people lose weight in fits and starts. I'm one of the latter ... I can eat perfectly on plan for 3 weeks and for the first week show no loss, the 2nd week drop 3lbs, and the 3rd week drop 1 lb. It's just the way my body works. I learn that over time it averages out to a healthy and reasonable loss, so I don't freak out.

Just give it time and be healthy. The rest will come.
