i think i got runners knee?

Hey guys

My knees started hurting while jogging on the treadmill last week to the point i can not jog anymore (i do elliptical instead). I have just started going to the gym again a month ago... I dont know if this is because I've tried pushing myself too do to much too soon or what...but I was at the highest weight i've ever been (5'11" 215lbs) and working my way back up to doing 10 minute miles for 30 mins.

I can walk fine without any pain, and can do elliptical, biking etc with no pain. I feel a slight discomfort going up stairs and there is pain while jogging.

I am trying to take it easy and like i said I can do elliptical with no pain or discomfort...

Personally, I would lay off the knee for a week or two and if the pain went away, work back into running. If it still hurts after a week or two, see an orthopedist. It could be minor or it could be serious.

Where is the pain? There are different injuries with different causes and different solutions.

it just feels like the knee caps hurt but like i said only when i start going at a jogging pace, so when i start bending the knees more and on impact i feel it. It seems to get better slowly each day i take it easy on them but i can't tell if its going to hurt or not until i start jogging.

Knee pain can be several things. Improper footwear in which case I'd suggest getting fit for running shoes at a real running store. Could be overuse... too much, too quickly. Use the 10% rule... do not increase distance or speed more than 10% per week. Could be poor technique... you want high cadence, short stride, NO BOUNCING. If you can, watch yourself in a mirror when you run and ensure you're not bobbing up and down. Try to stay as smooth as you can.

I second the opinion about shoe shopping. There are two cocerns with shoes. First is the quality of the shoe. Even within many brands there is a huge disparity in the quality of models. Chances of getting a viable shoe at a department store, or even a place like Modells, is slim. I have several pairs of New Balance that were from places like DSW or Modells. They are fairly well made, inexpensive, and look snazzy. However, I would never run in them. For that I went to a shoe shop that specializes in athletic shoes. I still use New Balance, but the models are much different (and more expensive). Teh second factor to keep in mind is that not all brands fit the same. I have yet to find a pair of Nike shoes that fit my flat feet. While NB (My shoe of cvhoice if you couldnt tell) has a number of styles and models that fit great. You really should spend time and find a good store that has a treadmill to run on. They will watch you for pronation and stride type and then recommend a good model to try on.

Is the pain below the kneecap, like in the groove below the bone? They have patellar straps that help tendonitis or the classic runners knee. I have used them and they do help as you're trying to recover (and not lose your running fitness). I have runner friends prone to the same injury and to prevent it they do a lot of strengthening their quads and hammies. The quads are more likely what need strengthening.

Hey guys and gals thanks for the advice. After taking it easy for a week or so I can run again without any pain. I bought some new shoes as well because my old gym shoes have many miles on them.
