I need to lose weight.

I'm new here, and I'm sure you've seen plenty of these threads as it is. But, just here me out.

I'm a 16 in year old male, 17 in December. Right now, I have a strong case of depression and I think a major part of it has to deal with my weight. I weigh about 168 pounds, and about 5' 10". I'm tired of sucking in my fat, and I need to deal with it.

My main concern on the weight to lose, is my stomach fat and my love handles. Here's the catch, my parents eat unhealthy a lot. They are both overweight. My dad is around 300+ (Same height) and I think my mom is around 200 (About 4 10"). I always talk to them to ask to eat healthy, and I ask my dad to stop drinking the beer (he can pack down about 12 a night). But they don't seem to listen, no matter what their doctors tell them. I can't afford a home gym, or a gym membership. I think I have enough for a couple dumbells and maybe one of those elastic things. I have a punching bag in the basement, and one of those "treadclimbers". No threadmill, though.

I try to eat healthy. I haven't been drinking pop, and when I feel like one, I'll have a coke zero once in a while. I cut my portions in half, and now I can barely pack down a sandwich at lunch time. I think it's good. I don't think I take in more than 1500 calories a day.

So, there's my weight story in a nutshell. I want to work my arms and legs and everything, but that's later. I just want a flat tummy, nothing like this baby I have in there right now.

Just want to lose the stomach fat and lose the love handles with perhaps some dumbells and an elastic rope thing. I would try but people are saying they don't help with stomach fat, they just build the muscle. What would you do/have done to get rid of stomach fat and love handles? Any help is greatly appreciated....

Also, I can post pictures if you would like to have an idea on what I'm trying to lose.

Thank you so much.

Hey, Chunkyboy,

What people have told you is correct. There is no such thing as spot-reducing. It's all about reducing your overall fat, which just happens to deposit itself on our bellies and hips. It's also about working out. This burns the fat and raises your metabolism, so your body just uses more energy.

You're already paying attention to your food intake, but I'll caution you against starving yourself. You're young and growing, and you need nourishment. I hear what you're saying about difficulties in working out, but the best thing you can do for free is walk. If you can get out for half an hour of good-paced walking ever day, that'll make a great start.

Also, do you have phys ed at school? If you talk to the gym teacher, I'm sure he can help you out.

You have two things in your favour: youth and will. You can do this, and I see you changing the long-term direction of your life. Good luck, man.

Hey Godzilla.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I do have Physical Education at my school. I was in that, as well as Sports Performance (hard work-out/cardio). Unfortunately, I have no room in my schedule next year for either of the classes. I'm looking for something I can do over the summer to shed off a couple pounds. I can go for a well paced walk, even a run wouldn't kill me. I go around the block twice on a bike ride every second day, and that's about a 5 or 6km ride. It's been so rainy and gloomy lately, it's been hard to get out. I'm done my exams so I have no more school, so I can't really talk to the gym teacher until next year.

Thanks for the help dude.
